William R. Longstreet

Among the gifts donated by Longstreet in the 1940s
was a vellum-bound set of the complete writings of Martin Luther, printed in
Germany between 1660-64; 2 sets of Luther's Bible, with vellum backings; and
original "Breaches Bible," dated 1610; leaves from the first English
translations of the Bible, dating back to 1535; an oversize copy of the King
James translation, dated 1612; and a number of Latin, French, Dutch, and German
biblical editions printed in the middle of the 16th century. Longstreet
continued to add to his collection at Albion into the mid-1950s. He also
donated rare Methodist pictures to the Religion Department of Albion College.
Two are engravings of John Wesley, a third is of Wesley at the age of six being
rescued from the parsonage fire, and the fourth depicts Bishop Asbury's
ordination in Lovely Lane Chapel in 1784.
