Symantec Anti-Virus Software for Students
Information Technology is pleased to to provide students with Symantec Anti-Virus
software on personal computers, Windows XP and higher (the program
is only available for Windows computers).
You can acquire the software using any
of the following methods: - Download the software from the web at
http://www.albion.edu/it/deploy/webinst/ . You will need to
provide your network user name and password to open this web page.
The installer will begin right after downloading the file.
-
Login to the network, go to the I: drive, open the NAV folder,
double click on the Symantec Antivirus Client icon to install the
client on your machine.
- Bring your computer to User Services, located on the Ground
Floor of Ferguson Hall and a staff member will install the program
on your computer. Please plan to leave your computer and pick it
up at a later time that day.
When installing this program keep in mind these
points:
- If you have any existing anti-virus software, you will need to
uninstall that software using the manufacturer's recommended
process prior to installing this software.
-
Once the download process begins, no additional
user input is needed.
-
If you want to make sure that everything
installed correctly and that you have the most up to date virus
definitions please check for a folder in the "program" section
of your start menu called "Symantec Client Security". Inside
that folder you should find an icon with the name "Symantec
AntiVirus Client". If this is the case, the software has
installed successfully. The program runs in the background
checking files you access to make sure they are virus free.
-
If there is an update for the virus definitions
it is automatically downloaded by the software and requires no
further configuration on your end. To check to make sure that is
happening click on the "Symantec AntiVirus Client" icon I
mentioned above. There will be a section that will be titled
"Virus Definition File" with your current version and a recent
date. If this is the case you are all set.
Virus protection software runs in the background
on your computer and alerts you if you run, copy, or try to access
virus-infected files. By using Symantec Anti-Virus, you
are assured that the program is automatically updated when your
computer is connected to the to the Albion College network (use of
a College network port).
If you need assistance
installing this software or using it to run a full file scan of
your computer, you can contact the HelpDesk at x0479 or
