Assistant Job Duties
This is an entry level position within Information Technology.
In addition to fulfilling the primary function of lab supervision, technology assistants may also
be sent to other areas of campus to assist with general technology issues.
Scheduling is flexible and every effort is made to accommodate student workers'
schedules. It is expected that students be available for two to four hour shifts
up to a maximum of 20 hours per week. They report to User Services or
Information Technology.
These are some of the basic job requirements:
- Good communication skills
- Enjoy helping others and
have the ability to train users on how to use a variety of software applications
- Must be able to check and respond to e-mail frequently
throughout the day even when not scheduled to work.
- Windows and/or Macintosh experience
- Able to work 10-20 hours per week
- Microsoft Office applications experience a definite plus (Word, Excel,
Access, PowerPoint, FrontPage)
- Weekend and night availability expected
- Must be able to travel from building to building as needed
to assist technology users on campus.

Technology Assistants may be required to arrive on campus one to two days before
normal move in for training.
These are the basic duties a Technology Assistant can expect to perform:
- Assisting users with using computers, printers
and scanners - logging on to the
network, using e-mail and operating the software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
FrontPage, Internet, etc.).
- Provide walk-in introduction training for all campus
supported Microsoft Office software applications, Internet Explorer, Adobe
Photoshop, and GroupWise.
- Provide assistance to multimedia users including Digital
Video Editing equipment and software.
- Reloading software on the workstations on a regular basis
- Tracking lab statistics (user counts, paper usage, etc.)
and entering data online.
- Able to run virus and spyware scans.
- Providing support to users for enhanced classrooms and
media carts throughout campus.
- Production support for multimedia and digital
video projects.
- Keeping the printer supplied with paper and toner
- General housekeeping - Dusting, static spray, cleaning monitors, mice,
keyboards.
- Making certain the public computing labs have adequate supplies on hand - paper, toner,
stapler, etc.
- Reporting problems and repair needs to the Help Desk.
- Maintain equipment and lab security, including
addressing inappropriate use and behavior among users and lab visitors.
Pay and benefits:
- This is an hourly paid position, paid once a month
- Work study preferred
- Technology Assistants are permitted to work on class assignments while on duty,
as long as the assigned tasks are complete and he or she is still able to
concentrate on the activity in the lab or office while working.
