Gerstacker International House

The International
House is a living-learning residence for upperclassmen with an interest
in French, German, Spanish and Japanese. Built in 1970 to replace individual
language houses, the I-House has three separate language units for
French, German, and Spanish. The I-House has a capacity of 57
students. language majors must live in the house for at least one
semester. Students often live in the house before and/or after a study
abroad experience. (Sometimes students may associate with one language
house, but live in a different area of the I-House).
There are Native
Speakers of each language in the language houses, one for French,
two for Spanish one for German and one for Japanese.
Native Speakers in the past have come from France, Belgium, Argentina,
Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru, Spain, Austria, and Germany. The Native Speakers help
students learn their language and arrange weekly activities in each
language.
Residents of I-House pledge to attend weekly
language house meetings.
The I-House meetings are programs focused on international issues - or
just fun activities! Some examples of meetings include speakers,
scavenger hunt (with clues in French, German, and Spanish), special
dinners put on by each house, talent nights, Holiday party with the
Department of Foreign Languages, etc.
