The atelier is modern in style but maintains a classical simplicity, built of the same stone, stucco, and tile found in the much older buildings of the region.

COMMENTS: Choose this program if you are a highly motivated student with a minimum of two and one half years of college-level Spanish and a particular interest in cultural, economic, and social issues relevant to contemporary Spain and its capital, Madrid. If you are ready for the challenge of using Spanish as your primary language of communication; if you want the opportunity to study alongside native Spanish students at a historic university; if you want to live in a small university town with few other American students in residence, yet have every cultural and leisure activity imaginable available in Madrid just 35 minutes away; then, this program is right for you.

U.K. (4 of 8): England

United Kingdom
University of Sussex

Brighton, England

SUBJECTS:  Full curriculum.

PREREQUISITES: 3.0 GPA, junior-level standing, demonstrated maturity.

LENGTH:  Academic year, made up of 3 terms. One semester possible (Spring only).

CREDIT: 8.0 Albion College units granted for 6 courses maximum that are taken during 3 complete terms. Spring and summer terms would offer 4 courses, with 4 Albion College credits granted. Any study done during only one term may not qualify for the minimum needed for a full load during a regular semester at Albion.

HOUSING: Dormitories. Single rooms with kitchens, shared by a group of 6-12 students. Contract may be by term or academic year (which includes Christmas and Easter vacations). Spring and summer terms only students may have difficulty finding accommodation on campus; apartments in Brighton area are available. Sussex staff will help with information on accommodations.

COSTS NOT COVERED BY ALBION: Travel to England; food; books; miscellaneous personal expenses.

Students applying for the spring semester are encouraged to apply early to have the best chance for on-campus housing.

FACULTY ADVISOR:

COMMENTS: One of the newest British Universities, founded in 1961, Sussex offers a full curriculum, including strong offerings in the physical sciences as well as the traditional junior year abroad courses taken by Americans in the humanities and social sciences. Courses are conducted in the traditional British manner: a mix of lectures and classes, but heavy emphasis on tutorial work. This may require more self-motivation than to what Albion students are accustomed. Students are encouraged to enroll for the full year, but partial-year study is possible, for Spring semester only, which includes the Spring and Summer terms at Sussex

LENGTH:  Semester or Academic Year

Full-year students follow the Aberdeen academic-year calendar for vacations and exams.

CREDIT: 8.0 units per year--determined by program director's recommendation. One semester of study is possible; please check the credit value of courses you are taking so that your credit adds up to a minimum of 3 units.

HOUSING: University housing.

COSTS NOT COVERED BY ALBION: Round trip airfare to Aberdeen. The program fee does not include board; that cost varies according to whether you eat hall food or cook for yourself. In addition students will need money for books, weekday lunches, laundry, entertainment, and two long vacations during the school year: 3 weeks at Christmas and 3 weeks during spring.

FACULTY ADVISOR:  Dr. Anne McCauley, Bobbitt Visual Arts, 517-629-0373, AMcCauley@albion.edu

COMMENTS: Founded in 1495, the university has a student body of about 5,000. A full curriculum is offered, and includes especially strong offerings in the physical sciences as well as the humanities and social sciences. Fall semester will go beyond Christmas break and end two weeks into January. To attend Fall semester, students can sit for exams/do additional work before the winter break begins on December 21 in order to return to Albion for the start of Spring semester. The only problem with one semester stays at Aberdeen is that the psychology offerings to majors (the 3000 level psychology courses) are still closed to second semester entry.

FACULTY ADVISOR: Dr Marcy Sacks, Robinson Hall, ext. 0298, msacks@albion.edu

COMMENTS: Edinburgh is one of the UK's most popular cities. Unlike cities in the south of Britain, it survived two world wars unmarked and so escaped having its character changed by modern developments. The elegant and stylish "new town" is a neo-classical development built between 1767 and 1830 and now houses the corporate headquarters of the banks, law firms and companies that play such an important part in modern Scottish life.
