PREREQUISITES: Minimum 3.0 GPA, at least one semester of Russian language is recommended, but not required, junior level standing, demonstrated maturity.

LENGTH: Fall and Spring semesters available.

CREDIT: Students take a full course load (25.5 quarter hours)

HOUSING: Students participating in this program will be housed at St. Petersburg State University, on the east side of downtown St. Petersburg.

Chinese University of Hong Kong
International Asian Studies Program

SUBJECTS: Mandarin and Cantonese, plus a full curriculum.

PREREQUISITES: Minimum 3.0 GPA, junior-level standing, demonstrated maturity, no prior study of Chinese language or area studies is required. Applicants should demonstrate a sincere desire to increase their understanding of Chinese culture and possess the curiosity and versatility to adapt to a foreign environment.

LENGTH: Academic year is encouraged; however, one-semester stays are possible.

CREDIT:  Students must take a normal course load of 12-18 credit hours per semester. (4 semester hours = 1 Albion College unit).

HOUSING: University housing for foreign students with Chinese roommates. Dormitories here impose closing hours and visitor's regulations which must be observed.

COSTS NOT COVERED BY ALBION: Travel to and from Hong Kong; local transportation; text books; laundry; air conditioning charge, entertainment; miscellaneous personal needs; meals; travel; security deposit.

COMMENTS: The Chinese University of Hong Kong is the host campus for the International Asian Studies program. Admission for both Chinese students and for American students on this program is competitive. A well-prepared application dossier is recommended. The Yale-China Association cosponsors the International Asian Studies Program and functions as its North American representative. Courses are taught in English. Courses taught in Mandarin or Cantonese are only open to those with the requisite language facility.

People’s Republic of China

A GLCA- recognized program through the Council for International Educational Exchange (CIEE).

SUBJECTS: Peking University: [Semester]: Advanced Track: Mandarin Chinese, contemporary Chinese culture, contemporary Chinese literature, classical Chinese literature. Intermediate Track: Mandarin Chinese and Chinese culture. [Summer]: Mandarin Chinese. Nanjing University: Mandarin Chinese

PREREQUISITES: Variable by program (minimum of one year of college-level Mandarin for Beijing and Nanjing). Basic prerequisites include a 2.75 GPA ( junior-level standing, demonstrated maturity.

LENGTH: Beijing: fall or spring semester, academic year, summer

CREDIT: Students may earn approximately 15 semester hours credit per semester or 3.75 units (four semester hours = one Albion College unit).

HOUSING: University housing for foreign students, sometimes with Chinese roommates.

COSTS NOT COVERED BY ALBION: Round trip airfare and personal expenses. Students at Taipei are responsible for their meals, but they do not pay Albion College board.

COMMENTS: Students can select an appropriate study opportunity from these four major universities. Curricular offerings and length of study varies with each option. It is possible to continue from one program to another, thus spending an academic year at two different universities.

Japan (1 of 5)

Tokyo, Japan
Waseda University

An Associated Colleges of the Midwest program

SUBJECTS: Language and Japanese Area Studies.

PREREQUISITES: 3.0 GPA, junior-level standing; demonstrated maturity. Acceptance in the program is conditional on completion of at least one semester or term of Japanese prior to departure.

LENGTH: Academic year plus summer (11 months).

CREDIT: General 8.0 units for one year on the program.

FACULTY: Classes are taught by both Waseda professors and visiting faculty members, including the Japan Study Resident Director.

HOUSING: With families in Tokyo.

COST: Albion College comprehensive fees cover orientation session, Waseda University tuition, room, partial board (breakfast and dinner with the host family), commuting expenses in Tokyo, the cultural practicum and administrative costs. The Japanese government has a scholarship program to make study in Japan feasible for exchange students. If the program costs are more than Albion, the student will be billed for the difference.

COSTS NOT COVERED BY ALBION: Students are responsible for lunches in Tokyo, personal expenses, books, and travel to and from the orientation site. Recent participants have budgeted $400-$500 per month for lunches, books, transportation in Tokyo, travel, and personal expenses.

COMMENTS: Students are required to study Japanese each term at Waseda. Electives may be chosen from the courses offered at the International Division, Waseda University. Courses are taught in English at Waseda. For three weeks in the Spring the Japan Study program moves to rural Shimane Prefecture to encounter more "traditional" Japanese life.

CREDIT: 16 semester hours, six upper-level undergraduate credits can be earned (three credits per course).

COMMENTS: Sophia University is well-known for its international environment. The Faculty of Liberal Arts is unique as it allows international and Japanese students to study together in seminar classes taught in English. Volunteer opportunities can be arranged.  A special orientation, homestays with Japanese families, guided field trips, and cultural activities designed to introduce different facets of Japanese culture.

COMMENTS: Sophia University, a private Jesuit institution, is one of the preeminent universities in Japan with over 10,000 students from around the world. CIEE students take courses through the Faculty of Liberal Arts. Approximately two-thirds of the students in this faculty are Japanese, and more than 40 nationalities are represented on campus. Sophia’s Yotsuya campus includes a library, computer labs, faculty and administrative offices, classrooms, and sports grounds. CIEE has an office on campus that provides support to CIEE students studying at Sophia University

SUBJECTS: Academic and intensive language programs that include a wide variety of cultural programs.

PREREQUISITES: junior-level standing

DATES: The Fall Semester runs the first week in September until the second week in December, and the Spring (Winter) Semester runs the first week in January until the second week in April.

CREDIT: 10-credit Japanese language course and one 3 or 4 credit elective course

HOUSING: Japanese homestays (upon request) or residential halls with Japanese students and faculty

COMMENTS: Intensive Japanese language is taught at four different levels, from beginning to advanced. No prior Japanese language study is necessary. Programs in English Language, Hospitality Business and Tourism (June – August), Environmental Sciences (June – August), and Comparative Health Care (May – August) are offered. JCMU students are able to experience many aspects of Japanese culture and life through programs: Elementary school visits, oral presentations, community interviews, cultural presentations, and community internships.

COMMENTS: The large, thriving, modern city of Nagoya is the gateway to the vast beauty and culture of central Japan. It is one of Japan's major cities and an important industrial and cultural center. Its rich natural environment provides the backdrop for scenic areas such as Ise Bay, Nobi Plain, and the Kiso River. Nagoya Castle, originally built in 1612, Atsuta Shrine, and the Tokugawa Art Museum are among the city's many famous attractions that draw visitors from around the world. Nanzan University, site of the IES Abroad Nagoya Program, is a distinguished private university on a wooded campus on a hill above Nagoya.

COMMENTS: The oldest and one of the most prestigious universities in Korea, Yonsei University is located in the middle of the bustling city of Seoul and its 12 million inhabitants, yet maintains a beautiful, quiet, well-wooded campus and a large (35,000) student population. Founded in 1885 by Protestant missionaries (one the husband of an Albion College graduate), Yonsei has grown to a campus of 17 colleges and 83 departments.
Courses for Albion students are taught in the Division of International Education of the university.

Pune, India 
An Associated Colleges of the Midwest program

SUBJECTS: Five week orientation with intensive Marathi language courses and a Foundation course that provides an overview of Indian history, society, and culture. Students will enroll in the Certificate Course in Marathi Language at Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, a university in Pune. Courses in the past have included: sociology, political science, Indian philosophy, art and architecture, and Marathi literature. Students also complete an independent study project.
The program also includes field trips to nearby cultural sites such as the Ajanta and Ellora rock-cut caves, Sihagad Fort, and Sanskriti.

PREREQUISITES:  2.7 GPA; junior-level standing; demonstrated capacity for independent study, contribution of the program to academic and future goals and demonstrated maturity.

LENGTH: Fall semester

CREDIT: Up to 4.5 units of Albion College credit can be awarded, if appropriate courses are chosen.

HOUSING: Students live together in hotels during first few weeks, then with host families.

COSTS NOT COVERED BY ALBION: Students will be responsible for the cost of transportation to and from the pre-departure orientation weekend, as well as to and from New York City or Chicago at the beginning and end of the program. Recent participants have budgeted between $200 and $250 per month to cover additional expenses which include books, lunches, local transportation, travel during program breaks, and incidental personal expenses.

An Antioch University program

Wuxi BuddhaSUBJECTS:  Core courses, language classes, Meditation Traditions and Field Research: Selected Topics. Emphasis is placed on a comparative approach to both theory and practice.

PREREQUISITES: 2.7 GPA; junior-level standing

LENGTH: Fall term

HOUSING: Lodging and vegetarian meals will be provided at the guesthouse within the compound of the Burmese Vihar (monastery).

 COMMENTS: In Bodh Gaya, ancient and contemporary Buddhism intermingle, and abstract philosophies take on a human dimension. It was here under the Bodhi tree that the prince-ascetic Gotama became the fully enlightened Buddha.
