The Republic of
Botswana
an ACM Program
SUBJECTS: Intensive courses in Setswana (the regional language) as well as African studies courses in the fields of social sciences and humanities
PREREQUISITES: 2.7 GPA and at least second-semester sophomore status
LENGTH: One semester offered in the spring, summer and fall
CREDITS: 4.0 Albion units
HOUSING: Graduate student dormitories.
COST: Same as Albion College room and board fees. Additional expenses include transportation to the program, books, local travel and personal expenses.

COMMENTS: At the University of Botswana students will take an intensive course in Setswana, the language spoken by 75% of the people in the region. There are no language prerequisites. In addition to the intensive language course students will be enrolled in an elective course in the social sciences or humanities and will also be enrolled in a course relative to the student’s major. Both the elective course and the major-specific course will be focused on exploring the cultural, economic and ecological diversity as well as the historical and regional context of present-day Botswana. An independent study project will be completed by the student during their time abroad. The program offers many other activities and opportunities including a wide range of guest speakers and several field trips to other locations in Botswana.
Cameroon:
Development and Social Change
a School for International Training Program
Courses: Intensive Language Study, French, Field Study Seminar, History, Geography, and Politics
Requirements: 3 recent semesters in college level French, and the ability to follow coursework in French as assessed by SIT.
Length: Semester 12 weeks
Credits: 16

Housing: Homestay, Five weeks in Yaounde', two weeks in Ngaounde're and one week in a rural setting. Other accomodations include hostels, private homes and small hotels.

Comments: This central African nation is home to more than 200 ethnic groups and even more languages and dialects. Famous for its folklore, art and diverse environments Cameroon is a nation striving to hold on to cultural heritage and diversity in the face of globalization and pressing socioeconomic needs.

Ghana
an SIT Program
SUBJECTS: All students in the program will take an intensive language study course in Fante (the local language), a history and cultures of the African Disapora seminar, a field study seminar and will then be required to conduct an independent study project on the local culture.
PREREQUISITES: 2.7 GPA and at least second-semester sophomore status
CREDITS: 4.0 Albion units
HOUSING: Students will be provided with a homestay
COST: Same as Albion College room and board fees. Additional expenses include transportation to the program, books, local travel and personal expenses.

COMMENTS: The History and Cultures of the African Diaspora program in Ghana provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn about the trans-Atlantic slave trade and its effects on the world today. There will also be several field trips including trips to the coastal beaches and rural villages of Ghana.

Kenya
an SIT Program

SUBJECTS: All students in the program will take an intensive language study course in Swahili (the local language), an interdisciplinary Swahili studies and coastal cultures seminar, a field study seminar and an independent study project.
PREREQUISITES: 2.75 GPA; junior standing; demonstrated maturity. Preference is given to students who demonstrate an interest in African Studies.
LENGTH: Semester long field based program.
CREDIT: 4 units
HOUSING: Home stays with Kenyan families
COST: Albion College tuition and fees, housing and board.

COMMENTS: The academic program begins with the on-site orientation and Kiswahili instruction. The orientation includes a required thematic course with a Field Study Seminar. The program ends with an Independent Study Project. Educational excursions are part of the program.

The Center for Wildlife
Management Studies
A School for Field Studies
program
SUBJECTS: Students are registered in four courses: Techniques of Wildlife Management, Wildlife Ecology, Environmental policy and Socioeconomic Values and a Directed Research.
PREREQUISITES: 2.7 GPA, junior-level standing, demonstrated maturity; have completed at least one college-level ecology or biology course
LENGTH: Fall or Spring semesters, Summer.
CREDIT: SFS semester programs incorporate course courses and carry a total of 16 semester credits (four units) in biology or environmental studies from Boston University. Summer courses carry 4 semester credits (one unit) in environmental studies.
HOUSING: Students have the incredible opportunity to conduct research from two prime locations. The National Park Camp is located on 60 acres of the Athi-Kapiti plains on the Southern border of Nairobi National Park. Kilimanjaro Bush Camp is located approximately 215 km southeast of Nairobi. At both field stations, students sleep in thatched-roor bandas, with a main building, or chumba, which houses a dining room, kitchen, classroom and library. Additional facilities include a duka (shop), choos (outhouse) and open-air showers.
COST: Albion College tuition and fees, room and board where applicable. This covers group equipment, supplies, scientific instruments and material.
COSTS NOT COVERED BY ALBION: Transportation to and from the program, personal gear (clothing, sleeping bags, backpacks, SCUBA gear) and any other personal expenditures, and any expenses incurred while traveling during the five day midterm break.

COMMENTS: Each SFS Center is located in a resource dependent community that has requested SFS assistance in addressing their environmental challenges. From a community base SFS students investigate real local environmental problems (case studies) from a number of disciplinary perspectives (usually ecology, resource management, economics, applied anthropology, and political science). Lectures by faculty and guests provide the theoretical and local background information needed to address the problem.

A Kalamazoo College program
SUBJECTS: Humanities and Social Sciences. All courses are taught in French. The academic program also includes Wolof language instruction, an introduction to field work in sustainable community development, and the Individual Cultural Research Project. Optional French courses at the Institut Français pour les Etudiants Etrangers.
PREREQUISITES: 2.75 GPA; 2 yrs of college level French; junior-level standing, demonstrated maturity. Preference is given to students with a demonstrated interest in African studies.
LENGTH: Fall Semester or Academic Year only.
Fall Semester- September to December
CREDIT: Up to a full year of Albion College credit (i.e., 8 units) for academic year work can be awarded, if appropriate courses are chosen. Kalamazoo College will advise students in orientation as to coursework that needs to be taken to get full credit. Note: 1 Kalamazoo College unit = .83 Albion College units.
HOUSING: Home stays or in housing rented by Kalamazoo College near the university.
COST: Albion College tuition and fees, room and board. These fees include round-trip transportation from the designated point of departure (usually New York) to Africa, some excursions.

COMMENTS: Program is planned for students who have the academic ability and language training to do European-type university work totally in French. Students may do an internship through the Akani internship program administered by the International Academic Programmes Office at UCT.

COMMENTS: One of the premier universities of South Africa, the University of Cape Town was also an "open university", one of only five in the country during the era of apartheid that was committed to non-discrimination in every aspect of its policy and governance. Its 14,000 students are drawn from every race, language group and political viewpoint in South Africa. In addition to teaching and research of the first rank, the university maintains an extensive academic support program for students of disadvantaged educational background and one of the largest community outreach programs of any university in South Africa.
A serious commitment to learning about South Africa and its emergence as a non-racial, democratic state is expected of all students participating.

SUBJECTS: All students in the program will take an intensive study course in Xhosa (the local language), a seminar on multiculturalism and social change and a field study seminar. The student will also complete an independent study project.

HOUSING: A four week home-stay will be provided by the program, followed by three one-week home-stays at three different locations in South Africa.

COMMENTS: This program is designed to introduce students to South Africa’s immensely diverse culture. Students will be given the opportunity to compare the current cultural harmony among the 33 ethnic groups to South Africa’s brutal history of colonialism, slavery and apartheid as well as explore questions and answers about the potential for positive social change.

SUBJECTS: All students will be enrolled in: An intensive course in Kiswahili (local language), Human evolution, Ecology of the local ecosystem and a course on Methodology (which includes a field project).
PREREQUISITES: 2.7 GPA, Junior or Senior standing and a strong background in natural or social sciences and field methodology.
LENGTH: One semester (Fall only)
CREDITS: 4.0 Albion units
HOUSING: Dormitories at the University of Dar es Salaam (first two months), Camp sites while in the field, and a family stay (last four weeks).
COST: Same as Albion College room and board fees. Additional expenses include transportation to the program, books, local travel and personal expenses.

COMMENTS: The program in Tanzania is for students who are interested in field study in the natural and social sciences. The first two month of the program are spent on-site at the University of Dar es Salaam followed by time spent living and studying in the field at camp sites. For the final four weeks of the program the student will return to Dar es Salaam for a family stay. There will also be several field trips to other cities in Tanzania. The program runs from late July until late November.
