This Honors Program course will focus on creating a composition-based podcast. Students, either individually or in groups, will create lecture presentations and compositions which will then be published on the web in the form of podcast episodes. The class will involve readings and lectures on music and its structural elements. Students will be given guidance as to how music is organized and how one might look at it when undertaking a formal analysis. They will explore the compositional process themselves by creating soundscapes and/or music involving traditional musical notation (depending on the musical knowledge and skill level of the student). In creating this class podcast, students will also become familiar with 'nuts and bolts' podcast-related issues such as RSS feeds, the challenge of avoiding copyright infringement, Creative Commons licenses, and how to freely share intellectual property.
