HSP 123 Great Issues in Science “Florida for Sale”
Class – Thursday 2:10-4:00pm
Lab - Tuesday 7:10-10:00pm
FLORIDA: FOR SALE
From prime real estate to water and virtually all of its living
resources, it seems that no part of the state of Florida is not "for
sale." This class will examine through readings, film, discussion, and
laboratory sessions, various aspects of the biology, geology, and
geochemistry of Florida in historical, political, and cultural contexts.
The class will seek to evaluate models of resource utilization and
management, and will investigate the success of various models during a
field trip to southern Florida between fall and spring semesters. Class
discussions and student presentations will focus on issues of coastal
urban development and will highlight lands and submerged resources
placed under protection because of sanctuary and national park
designations. The field trip will include the Florida Keys, Everglades
National Park, and the Orlando entertainment metroplex and surrounding
threatened habitats.
Note: Travel is an expected part of this seminar.
The dates for travel have not be finalized but travel will occur during
the break between the Fall and Spring semesters (most likely in January
2006). There will be some additional out-of-pocket expenses associated
with this trip but these expenses should be less than $300. If you have
any questions about this, please contact Lisa Lewis at lblewis@albion.edu
