Holocaust Studies Syllabus IDY 198 Holocaust Studies Spring 2009 Wendell Will Room, 7:10-9 pm; Thursdays, February 26; March 5, 19, 26; April 2, 9 Required Texts: Bergen, War and Genocide; Solomon, Judaism: A Very Short History; Wiesel, Night; Gross, Neighbors This seminar is one component of the Holocaust Studies Service-Learning Project in Poland helping to restore the New Jewish Cemetery in Wrocław and visiting historical sites in Wrocław, Kraków, and Oświęcim. While in Wrocław, all trip participants will discuss the books by Wiesel and Gross. For the Spring Semester seminar, you are required to write a seven-page paper on the question: Why study the Holocaust? Your essay must integrate at one or two major topics covered in Bergen’s War and Genocide. You may also draw relevant material from any of the course presentations or from any of the other course readings. Topics include but are not restricted to: antisemitism, racism, Nazi ideology, “living space” (Lebensraum), eugenics/“euthanasia,” emigration, ghettoization, extermination. This paper is due at the beginning of our last session on April 9. You will also keep a journal during your stay in Poland, which will be handed in to the staff at the end of the trip. All travel forms distributed on February 26 are to be returned on April 2, along with three photocopies of the photo page from your passport.
