Scholarships and Awards
The History Department is
endowed to award a number of scholarships and prizes to outstanding
History majors, from sophomores to graduating seniors.
Our prize-winners for 2007-08:
The Julian S. Rammelkamp Junior Scholarship in History was awarded to
juniors Douglas Bosin, Kristin Butler, Ron Catoni,
Autumn Charnley and
Hannah Scheiwe. Doug will volunteer with a hospice network this summer,
in preparation for his intended career in medicine. Kristin, an alum of
the 2007 Holocaust Studies Service Learning Project, will dedicate her
summer to research on "Fallen Gentlemen in Victorian Literature and
Society." Ron is starting thesis research on the life and legacies of
controversial Confederate General James Longstreet. Autumn, a future
teacher, will help direct a day camp for disadvantaged youth in Port
Huron. Hannah starts her thesis research on "Strategic Bombing of World
War II and Its Implications on Air Power."
Anne Seelbach received the Donald P. Stone Memorial Scholarship. Anne
looks forward to student teaching in a Jackson high school, especially
to designing a class in World History.
The Michael W. Grice '63 Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Ron Catoni.
The David Morris-Eldridge Pierce Sophmore Scholarship in History was
awarded to Kathleen Kohn and Andrew Neagoe. Kat, a double major in
History and Spanish, will take part in the Border Studies Program in
Ciudad Juárez and El Paso in fall 2008.
The History Department also congratulates . . .
Ross Gavin, ’08, and Zach Tucker, ’08, entering the School of Law at
Wayne State University.
Jim Harris, ’08, admitted to the history graduate program at the
University of North Carolina-Charlotte.
Brian Hearns, ’08, selected by Teach for America to teach elementary
school in the Chicago area.
Simona Shuboni, ’07, admitted to the History graduate program at Cornell
University to pursue her interests in Eastern European history.
Andrew Wakefield, '04, a student at the University of Michigan Law
School. Named a Dean's Public Service Fellow, Andrew is working at the
U.S. House of Representatives, Office of General Counsel.
We wish the best to . . .
Ryan Burtka, ’08, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, in Djibouti, Africa,
during the upcoming year.
