Scholarships and Awards

The History Department is endowed to award a number of scholarships and prizes to outstanding History majors, from sophomores to graduating seniors.

Our prize-winners for 2008-09:

Ron Catoni received the Julian S. Rammelkamp Award in American History, in recognition of his thesis on "The Sin of Denial: Abram Ryan and the Lost Cause."

The Julian S. Rammelkamp Junior Scholarship in History was awarded to juniors Kristin Butler, Jeffrey DeMoss, Mallory Fellows, and Andrew Neagoe. Kristin and Mallory participated in the Holocaust Studies Service Learning Program in Poland in May 2009. Kristin will take part in the ACM Newberry Seminar in the Humanities in Chicago in Fall 2009 where she will examine slave narratives. Jeff, a future teacher, is teaching in the Albion public schools as part of  the Education program’s Maymester ; then he will direct a soccer program at a New York summer camp. Andrew, a double major in Economics & Management (with a Gerstacker concentration) will intern this summer at the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network.

Louis Kraus received the Phillip H. and Shirley Kennedy Battershall Scholarship, in conjunction with the Ford Institute. An alum of the Border Studies Program in Nogales and Tucson in 2008, Lou is initiating research for a thesis on Mexican immigration.  

The David Morris-Eldridge Pierce Sophomore Scholarship in History was awarded to Kerri Marowske.  Kerri took part in the Holocaust Studies Service Learning Program in Poland in May 2009.

Erin Powell, ’09, entering the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Pittsburgh.  

Hannah Schweie, ’09, for completion of her thesis “Bombs Away: The Military, Political, and Social History of the Airplane and the British and American Airmen Who Fought the Strategic Bombing Campaign in the Second World War.”

Bekah McCafferty, `09, joins the Peace Corps for work in Togo.

Elizabeth Goetz, ’08, entering the graduate program in English at Wayne State University.
