Smith Finishes Third in Zone Finals
Three
members of the Albion College equestrian hunt seat team completed the
season by performing in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association's
Zone Finals at the Michigan State Fairground in Detroit March 28. The
Britons compete in a highly competitive region and often compete against
schools with equine-specific majors.
Lannis Smith (Northville/Northville), a first-year
rider, took home a third place ribbon in walk/trot/canter.
Merrill Howland (East Grand Rapids/East Grand Rapids), a
senior and previous Zone qualifier, and Lauren Sumner (Royal
Oak/Kimball), a junior, finished eighth in novice over fences
and intermediate flat, respectively.
Howland said of her last collegiate competition, "I'm very
happy to leave the team in this position because I know that it will
only continue to grow and be more successful in the future."
Seconding her sentiment, coach Jana Armstrong said,
"I am very pleased with my riders' attitudes and efforts at Zone Finals.
To have three riders attending was a great accomplishment for the team.
We had some very strong riders this year and I look forward to coaching
them again next season."
