The Hoofbeat
Fall 2006 issue

The Hoofbeat is proud to announce it’s first issue! This newsletter is intended to provide a short glimpse at the entire equestrian program at Albion including the dressage team ,hunt seat team, equestrian club, and results from shows students have gone to on their own. As a junior, and having seen first hand the continual growth of the facility, teams, and club membership, it’s a huge step forward to be able to send this newsletter to prospective students, alumni and current students. As the equestrian program continues to grow, so will this newsletter. If you ever want more information on the equestrian program here at Albion, visit the Nancy G. Held Equestrian Center website at: www.albion.edu/heldcenter.

Happy reading!

From the Aisle
Here’s a look at three members of the Albion equestrian program as they talk about why they came to Albion College and how they became involved with horses.

Sara Sheffer
Class Year: 2007
Hometown: Traverse City, MI
Horse: Cliff

Why Albion?
"The equestrian facility made my decision a lot easier when choosing to come to Albion College. Besides the strong academic reputation Albion College holds, the chance to be a part of an equestrian program really interested me."

Future goals:
"I am planning on starting graduate school to complete a doctorate in psychology in fall 2007. I am currently in the process of selling my horse because of my goal to further my education, but I hope to continue riding, own horses and show again once I have established my career."

Kayla Disher
Class Year: 2010
Hometown: Plano, TX
Horse: Papparazzi

Why Albion?
"The barn attracted me the most. I don't think that I've ever seen such a well run facility."

How did you start riding?
"I started taking actual riding lessons twice a week at the Singapore Polo Club (because my family and I lived there) and continued to ride in Singapore, and Melbourne, Australia, and again, here in the states. We moved around a lot, but I always found a way to ride."

Kristin Foley
Class Year: 2008
Hometown: Darien, CT
Horses: Dylan and Annie

Why Albion?
"The size of the equestrian facility and Albion’s small, personal campus attracted me.  I liked the idea of a equestrian facility so close to campus at a good liberal arts college."

How did you start riding?
"I started begging for lessons while living in New York, and finally got to try riding in 4th or 5th grade. I began riding dressage, switched to hunt seat, and then went back to eventing while in high school."

Thank you for reading the first issue of The Hoofbeat. If you ever have any story ideas for future issues or comments on current issues please contact Kate Van Ness at KBV11@albion.edu.
Again, thank you for your interest in the equestrian program at Albion College.
