Giving back to the equestrian
community has always been an important focus for the Albion
College Equestrian Club.
For the
club's spring semester fundraiser, club members baked
over around 200 cookies, muffins, rice krispy treats, and
even puppy chow for a school wide bake sale. All money
raised went to C.A.N.T.E.R. to help purchase ex-racehorses.
The club raised $180 for C.A.N.T.E.R. in a two day bake
sale.
The Communicative Alliance for the
Networking of Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses (C.A.N.T.E.R.) buys
horses from racing trainers and at end of year sales.
Often these horses are no longer competitive at the race
tracks, either because of age, injury, or they just aren't
fast enough. C.A.N.T.E.R. gives these horses another
chance as a pleasure riding horse, or even as a pasture pet.
The Michigan branch of the organization works closely with
Michigan State University's large animal veterinary program
to give horses the medical care they need, which often
requires surgery.
C.A.N.T.E.R. places the horses up for adoption and beings
the sometimes long process of finding the right home for
these amazing equine athletes. Many ex-racehorses go
on to have successful careers in Dressage, Hunters, Jumpers,
Eventing, and even Western!
The Albion College Equestrian Club
plans to do more work with C.A.N.T.E.R. later in the
semester. Currently, the club plans on helping at the
organization's TEAM eventing challenge in early May.
