The Equestrian
Club was awarded the top honor for Albion College clubs at
the annual Sleight Servant Leadership Deserts on April 18.
The Sleight Servant Leadership Deserts honoring students and
clubs who have shown outstanding leadership and achievement
throughout the school year.
The Equestrian
Club was chosen as the Outstanding Student Organization of
the 2006-2007 School Year. The club was given the
honor because of the work that club members have put into
widening the appeal of the club. In the last year,
membership has grown substantially,
allowing the club to raise nearly $600 for equine-related
non-profit organizations. The club also held the first
every community open house of the Equestrian Center.
In the competition arena, the club sponsored the dressage
team, which was ranked 5th in the region at the end of the
year. The club also raised money to send two dressage
team members to the IDA National Championships.
The Sleight
Servant Leadership Program is designed to give students the
opportunity to do volunteer work throughout the school year,
as well as give participants the skills to become better,
stronger leaders. The awards deserts at the end of the
school year honor the hard work of students involved in the
Sleight program and campus clubs and organizations.
This was the
first year that the Equestrian Club participated in the
awards. Club president Halley Sissom (Chelsea /
Chelsea), junior, wanted to honor four club members who
showed outstanding devotion to the club.
First year
students Emily Amidon (Portage / Portage Northern)
and Lauren Sumner (Royal Oak / Kimball) were both
honored for the work they put into organizing and
implementing the bottle drive fundraiser for the club's
Giddy Up! event.
Sophomore Kathryn Pflasterer (Ann Arbor / Community)
was honored for her work video taping Giddy Up! and working
on the club's year end movies and slideshow.
Junior Katie
Lindow (Canton / Canton) was given community service
award for her dedication and service to Albion's surrounding
Equestrian Community.
