Look out
National Championships, the Britons are coming!
On
Sunday, February 25th, Albion dominated their final
double-header of the 2007-2008 competition season at Lake
Erie College by claiming four first place ribbons, two high
point rider championships, a reserve high point rider
championship, two team grand championships, and a team
reserve championship, along with numerous other awards. This
feat was especially impressive for a team which began the
year with a new coach, Danielle Menteer, and that was short
one rider for both its “A” and “B” teams, therefore leaving
them without their “drop score,” which allows a team the
disregard their lowest score in order to improve the overall
team placing.
On
Saturday, February 24th, Brittany White ‘10 (Midland / H.H.
Dow) rode in the open division and won her class with a
score of 66.67%, which also made her the overall high point
rider for that day of competition. A two-time national
qualifier as an individual, team captain Halley Sissom
(Chelsea/ Chelsea) scored a 71.00% in the open division on
Sunday, an excellent score that helped her win the class and
gave her the high point rider award for Sunday’s
competition.
Mark
Lampen ‘10 (Zeeland / Zeeland East) rode to a third place
finish on Sunday, scoring a 64.4%. Lampen was awarded year
end Reserve Champion for the region in the Upper Training
level division. Heather Riecker ‘11 (Dexter / Dexter) rode
to a second place finish on both Saturday and Sunday, with
her best test scoring a 64.4%.
Mary
Applegate ‘10 (Grandville / Grandville) received first place
on both Saturday and Sunday at Introductory level. On Sunday
Applegate won her class with a 70%, making her the reserve
high point rider for the day. Allison Robbins ‘10 (Chardon,
OH / Plainfield Central) placed second on both days, scoring
a 69.5% on Sunday, and was awarded year-end reserve champion
for the region at Introductory.
Albion
has only competed as a part of the Intercollegiate Dressage
Association (IDA) since 2005. Every year, however, Albion
has sent at least one rider to the IDA National
Championships. Senior Halley Sissom (Chelsea / Chelsea)
competed at Nationals for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons as
an individual rider. Sophomore Mark Lampen (Zeeland /
Zeeland East) also competed at the National Championships as
an individual for the 2006-07 season. This is the first time
that Albion has ever had a team of four riders qualify.
Additionally, two Albion riders have qualified to compete at
the nationals as individual competitors. Mary Applegate ‘10
(Grandville / Grandville) was the regional Grand Champion
for Introductory division while Halley Sissom was named
Grand Champion of the First Level Division, earning them the
opportunity to go head to head with some of the best young
dressage riders in the nation.
The IDA
National Championships will be held April 26th- 27th at Mt.
Holyoke College in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
