Heathman '03 Wins Regional Championship

Capping an impressive competition season, Albion College Equestrian Club advisor Randi Heathman ’03 and her 11 year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding Ricochet were recently named Region Two Adult Amateur champions at Second Level.  The pair competed in the United States Dressage Federation (USDF) Regional Championship at the Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, Illinois over Albion’s homecoming weekend, October 2-4, 2009.

Cold, windy weather, rain, and muddy footing made the competition a challenge for all of the riders and horses involved, but Heathman and Ricochet rose to the occasion on their Second Level ride and scored a career-high 69.881% to secure first place out of 25 riders and earn the distinction of regional champions.

In order to qualify for the regional championship, horses and riders must achieve two minimum scores at their particular level at two different USDF recognized competitions during the season.  Heathman and Ricochet earned their qualifying scores at both Second and Third Levels at the Waterloo Hunt Club horse show series over the summer, where they were also named reserve series champions at Third Level in the adult amateur division and Heathman earned the scores necessary to receive her USDF Bronze Medal.

The regional championship is the biggest victory to date for the pair, who are based at the Nancy G. Held Equestrian Center.  They also finished ninth of 22 riders in the Third Level adult amateur championship at Lamplight.

Heathman plans to bring Ricochet out at Fourth Level in the 2010 competition season.
