In May 2007, Albion College President Peter T. Mitchell signed Albion
College to the American
College and University President’s Climate Commitment, which
pledges Albion to strive for carbon neutrality by decreasing our carbon
footprint. The agreement is also supported by current President Donna
Randall. Albion is one of over 600 colleges and universities nation-wide
who have signed the agreement.

As part of the nation-wide effort to reach millions of
citizens and lawmakers, in January 2008 Albion College's
Focus the Nation
raised awareness of global warming issues. Over 25
professors helped to host a teach-in covering the diverse
aspects of global climate change. Other events included a
talent show, a piano concert and a round-table discussion
with campus, local and state leaders.

Recyclemania is a national initiative among college and
university campuses that uses an annual 10-week competition
to help local campus groups encourage recycling efforts at
their schools. Student volunteers promote and manage all
aspects of the competition, working actively with Albion
College's Grounds department throughout the competition. |

Last fall, Albion College hosted a global climate change
awareness fair as part of the nation-wide day of climate
change action,
Step It Up 2007.
Students from over 20 campus groups presented on various
aspects of climate change. State Senate Minority Leader and
Albion College alum Mark Schauer gave an address and was
presented with a citizen's comment of over 700 signatures
calling for climate action from elected officials. |

As part of the spring
Step It Up 2007,
students took part in a rally calling for a nation-wide 80%
reduction in greenhouse gases by the year 2050. Other parts
of this day included a walk through the city of Albion
learning about the historic energy use, tree plantings and a
test-drive in a Honda hybrid. |
