      Colloquium

The Geology Department spirng '09 colloquia will be held 2:10-3 p.m. on Friday afternoons.  The colloquia features presentations by junior and senior geology and earth science majors and minors, as well as faculty and guest speakers.

Colloquium Rules and Guidelines

Participation

  1. All junior and senior Geology and Earth Science majors must participate for 4 semesters.

  2. All junior and senior Geology minors must participate for 2 semesters.

  3. Participation includes regular attendance and giving one talk each semester.

  4. Students missing a semester due to off-campus study or student teaching must still give the required number of talks.

  5. Students are allowed one unexcused absence each semester.

  6. Students are discouraged from taking courses that interfere with colloquium.  An exception to this must be approved in writing by the department chair.  Only one exception will be allowed to each student.  Make-up talks must be given.

Remediation
Failure to follow the above rules may result in a student being assigned a penalty talk or being refused a degree.

Choosing an Talk Topic

Presentations can be based on 1) independent faculty-mentored research; 2)  off-campus geology experience; or 3) a peer-reviewed journal article.  Presentation topic must approved by a faculty member.   It is strongly recommended that students consult with faculty members whose teaching/research is most similar to the presetation topic. 

 

Some possible sources, include journals in Geology Conference Room, print or online sources from the library, electronic journals list.  Make sure you check out the ScienceDirect Physical Sciences journal list.  To do an article/topic search use GeoRef or Web of Science (Librarian Mike Van Houten can help).  Choose an article that you can handle and remember that short easy. 

Talks

  1. Topics/papers must be selected and discussed with an appropriate faculty member the week before the presentation.

  2. The title of the talk must be emailed to Carol Caswell by noon on the Friday before the talk.

  3. Please check out the Example Powerpoint

  4. The talk should last approximately 12-15 minutes. 

Handouts

  1. The handout should be a summary, not a full printout, of the Powerpoint presentation.

  2. The handout should give full reference, define key terms, outline key points.  The length should be limited to 1-2 pages.  If you use figures, they should be legible.

  3. Photocopy enough handouts for all attendees.
