Field Camp |
|
|
The Albion College Geology Department offers a 5+-week field camp
each summer. The field camp travels through northwestern
Wyoming, Yellowstone National Park, and the Black Hills in South
Dakota. During the field camp students gain experience in
both traditional geologic field mapping and electronic GPS
mapping techniques in a variety of geologic settings. Rock
types and settings include Precambrian granites, gneisses, and schists, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic strata,
Tertiary volcanics, and Pleistocene glacial deposits. For
more information see the field camp web
page. |

Field Research
Fieldwork is essential for the majority of geology research.
Albion College Geology Dept. faculty
have recently conducted fieldwork in Antarctica, western China,
northwestern Wyoming, eastern California, western South Dakota,
as well as locally in southern Michigan. Students conduct
research projects regularly conduct fieldwork as well.
Recent student field research projects included three separate
Antarctic research projects on glacial-volcanic contacts,
analyses of a tuff-ring complex, and a study of sea-floor basalt
deposits, paleontological studies in Wyoming, analyses of
climate change impacts on plants along the California-Nevada
border. Additionally, many geology courses at all levels
include student field research. |

Regional Geology Field Trip |
|
Regional Field Geology, Geology 210, is a course taught each
spring that culminates in a field trip that tends to last eight
to ten days. Below is a list of past field trips. Click on the
