Albion College's Foundation for Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity can help students pursue independent study in their areas of interest.

The Foundation for Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity (FURSCA) was established to promote and support student research, original scholarship and creative efforts in all disciplines. Through a number of programs, taking place at all points in a student's career at Albion, FURSCA can help students pursue independent study in their areas of interest.

Students work closely with a faculty mentor to develop and carry out research or other creative projects. Participation in such projects provides valuable experience beyond the scope of classroom work, and enhances a student's preparedness for future employment or post-graduate studies.

Research Grants

FURSCA awards Academic Year Grants to purchase supplies or cover other costs associated with student research studies. We also provide funds for Conference Grants to attend professional meetings, or to collect data for research projects. Our Summer Research Grant program provides students with on-campus housing and a stipend for up to 10 weeks, to allow students to remain at Albion during the summer to work with faculty members on creative projects.

Student Projects

We also co-sponsor the Elkin R. Isaac Research Symposium each spring, which showcases student research and scholarly activities. And in conjunction with the Prentiss M. Brown Honors Program, FURSCA sponsors the Student Research Partners Program.

We're proud to provide these opportunities for students at Albion to get involved in hands-on, original, and creative projects in any area of scholarship that interests them. Please contact FURSCA with questions or suggestions.

Mission Statement

The original investigation, interpretation, and presentation of knowledge is one of the highest forms of learning. The Foundation for Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity fosters exploration and discovery by students and the integration of research into the way we teach and learn. The Foundation defines "research" as a set of activities leading to new knowledge or creation and supports scholarly projects in which students are the principal investigators. The Foundation exists to endorse, encourage, and support undergraduate research and research opportunities throughout the campus community, particularly in academic departments, institutes, and centers, and recognizes the importance of diversity in academic thought, methodology, and the presentation of research results.
