Off-Campus Study

The opportunity to use newly acquired language skills while continuing to develop them through study abroad is the high point in college life for many modern language students. Each year, 30 to 35 Albion students study in a foreign country in coordination with our Center for International Education.

During their off-campus experience, they study at a university and, whenever possible, live with a family in order to experience firsthand the culture of that country. Students in approved off campus study programs generally earn the same number of credits as they would while attending classes at Albion. All courses taken off-campus are on a graded basis, unless the student requests the credit/no credit (non-graded) option.

Costs of studying abroad (tuition, room and board) are about the same as they would be on the Albion campus. Travel expenses are additional.

*new* *new* *new* Japanese Programs: Students of Japanese may spend one or two semesters in either Tokyo, Nagoya or Siga area, Japan. Students may participate in Japan Studies program at Waseda University through GLCA, Sophia University through CIEE, Nanzan University through IES, and Japan Studies for Michigan Colleges through JCMU.

French Programs-- Students of French may spend one or two semesters, usually during the junior year, studying language and culture in a French-Speaking community such as Grenoble, Paris or Aix France and Dakar, Sénégal.  Some of these programs are only open to French majors, while others are taught in English and open to students outside the French program.

German Programs- German majors or students interested in German cultural studies can spend one semester in Heidelberg or Tübingen, Germany. We are also piloting a new semester long study abroad program in Vienna, Austria.

Spanish Programs -- Through Albion’s membership in the Great Lakes Colleges Association (GLCA), students may participate in off-campus study programs in Spain, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic. An Albion College semester program for Spanish students in Mexico includes course work in language, literature, history and other fields.

Other GLCA programs are offered in Europe, Africa and Asia. All foreign study opportunities at Albion are offered through the William W. and Gladys Dawson Diehl International Studies Program.
