Brighter Futures: Working in Albion Elementary Schools
Written by
Marion Clement,
French Enrichment Teacher
Brighter Futures is a program
through the Albion Public School system that allows elementary students
to supplement their classroom learning briefly during the day.
Within this program, students spend their first hour of class in their
appropriate grade. The second hour is the enrichment hour, which is
where I come in. Students are allowed to choose the subject for
their enrichment hour from a variety including drama, nutrition, Mexico,
dance, and French (and many others).
I
teach the basics of French Language to students for an hour twice a week
for six weeks. I make all my own lesson plans and teach my class
alone. I really have no idea what I plan on doing after
graduation, but I always considered teaching -- either French or English
as a second language -- an option for me. Participating in
Brighter Futures is giving me the opportunity to spend time in the
classroom and helping me decide if teaching is even something I could
see myself doing in the future. I do like it. I'm not sure
if I want to make a career out of it, but I like it. Teaching is a
very trying situation and having students that range from 2nd-5th grades
does not make it any easier. As far as the students are concerned,
I'm already a real teacher: as far as they're concerned. I sit at
a desk, I conduct the class, and I have to discipline them.
