This year I am the only French TA so I will be working with French 201
and 301 classes during the first semester, organizing tutorials four
times a week and the weekly activity on Wednesday nights (at 9 p.m.) in
the French lounge in the I-House. I also invite you to come and join us
for our weekly conversation table every Monday at noon in Upper Baldwin!
I came to Albion to learn more about teaching, to improve my English and
help students feeling more comfortable when speaking French which I hope
I will achieve! But I am also eager to learn more about the American
culture, the American way of life and meet American people, so it is
really going to be an intercultural experience!
Besides, not only am I a TA but I am also a student and this semester I
will be taking an American literature class as well as Spanish 201 so I
will also attend the Spanish tutorials and language tables! It is
sometimes difficult to deal with so many languages but at the same time,
it will be very enriching!
More information about
me: I have been practicing modern jazz dance for ten years or so and I
like scrap booking especially when I am writing Christmas cards or
simply to my friends. I like listening to music and some of my favourite
artists are Alanis Morrissette, Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Lauryn Hill
but also Marvin Gaye or The Beatles and as far as French artists are
concerned, I like listening to Sinclair, MiG, Jehro… But most French
singers sing in English…isn’t it ironic? I also like watching movies but
I could not say which one is my favorite. (Does the fact that I saw Gone With The Wind twenty times count??...)

Je m’appelle Mélanie,
j’ai 22 ans et je suis la “native speaker” française cette année à
Albion College! Je viens d’Albi, une petite ville dans le Sud de la
France, près de Toulouse où je fais mes études. J’étudie l’anglais
depuis plus de dix ans donc je sais bien que c’est parfois difficile
d’apprendre une langue étrangère, mais j’espère vous aider à parler
français avec plus de facilité!! Je viens de terminer ma
quatrième année de fac (que l’on appelle Master 1, mais je dois encore
passer ma deuxième année de Master…). Cette année, je me suis
spécialisée en littérature anglaise et j’ai écrit un mémoire sur
Jonathan Coe, un auteur britannique (d’ailleurs je vous le recommande!)
mais après avoir passé un an aux États-Unis, j’aurais peut-etre envie de
travailler sur un auteur américain que j’aurais découvert, qui sait…
Cette
année je suis la seule assistante de français et je vais donc travailler
avec les cours de français 201 et 301 au premier semestre. Je
vais organiser des tutorats quatre fois par semaine et l’activité
hebdomadaire le Mercredi soir à 21h dans le lounge français de la Maison
Internationale. Je vous invite aussi à rejoindre la table de
conversation française qui a lieu tous les lundi à 12h au premier étage
de Baldwin!
Je suis venue à Albion
pour en apprendre plus sur l’enseignement, pour améliorer mon anglais et
aider les étudiants à se sentir plus à l’aise avec le français, et
j’espère vraiment y arriver! Mais j’ai aussi très envie de découvrir la
culture et le mode de vie américains ainsi que de rencontrer des
Américains, donc cette année sera vraiment une expérience
interculturelle! De plus, je ne suis pas
seulement TA, je suis aussi une étudiante et ce semestre je vais suivre
un cours de littérature américaine et le cours d’espagnol 201 donc je
vais aussi assister aux tutorats d’espagnol et aux tables de
conversation! C’est parfois difficile de jongler entre toutes ces
langues, mais en meme temps, c’est très enrichissant!
Un peu plus de
renseignements sur moi : je fais de la dance modern-jazz depuis environ
dix ans et j’aime bien le “scrapbooking”, surtout pour faire des cartes
de voeux ou bien quand j’écris à mes amis. J’aime beaucoup écouter de la
musique et certains de mes artistes préférés sont Alanis Morrissette,
Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Lauryn Hill mais aussi Marving Gaye ou The
Beatles. En ce qui concerne les artistes français, j’aime écouter
Sinclair, MiG, Jehro… Mais la plupart des chanteurs français chantent en

everyone my name is Miralva I’m from Colima, Mexico.
I’m so glad to be
here meeting new people and living this experience as an Albion TA this
year. I graduated from the University of Colima, as a Foreign Language
Teacher. I love my family and friends, they are an important part of my
life, I like to listen music (from all kinds), dancing, going out with
friends, spend time with the family, I love parties and sports.
I want
to share with you some important aspects of my country and the city
where I live, “Colima” is a beautiful city with a great natural
diversity, it has different types of weather, warm in the south and cold
in the north, there are a lot of traditional and cultural aspects that
people always try to keep alive. The word "Colima" comes from the
Nahuatl "collimaitl" (colli = ancestors or gods, and maitl =
domain of).

Estoy muy contenta de estar aquí en Albion, conociendo gente nueva y
viviendo esta experiencia como asistente de español. Me gradué de la
Universidad de Colima como Profesora de Lenguas Extranjeras. Mi familia
y mis amigos son una parte muy importante de mi vida y los quiero mucho.
En mi tiempo libre me gusta escuchar música (de cualquier tipo), me
encanta bailar salir con mis amigos y pasar tiempo con mi familia, adoro
las fiestas y los deportes.
Quiero compartir con ustedes algunos
aspectos importantes de mi país y de la ciudad donde vivo, “Colima” es
una ciudad hermosa, con una gran diversidad natural, el clima también es
muy diverso, en algunos lugares del sur es calido mientras que en la
parte norte suele ser muy fresco. El nombre de Colima proviene del

Yotzin Cortes Medina
Native Speaker Teaching Assistant or
Spanish
Hello! My name is Yotzin Cortes-Medina and
I’m a Spanish native speaker and TA in Albion this year. I’m from
Colima, Mexico; a small city in the Mexican pacific. I graduated
from college in 2006 with a BA in Foreign Language Teaching and last
year I worked as an English teacher in my hometown university. In
2005 I went to New Zealand as an exchange student and then I was in
Sydney, Australia for two weeks.
In Albion I take care of the SPAN301 tutorials and I’m also
attending every Spanish language table. I also help with the weekly
activities in the I-House, which will be fun! Plus, I take classes
as every other Albion student does. This semester I will be taking
international studies, American history and guitar classes. I also
go to the Dow for a swim.
I like music a lot; I even play drums a bit. I enjoy when people
talk about the music they like. I love The Cardigans, The Strokes,
Kings of Leon, Café Tacuba, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Pink Floyd, and
many others. I also enjoy classical and reggae. My favorite movies
are Amores Perros, La Ley de Herodes, El Espinazo del Diablo,
Matrix, and The Shawshank Redemption.
I have family in California and Seattle, and I will visit them at
the end of the semester. I live in Room 16 Spanish House of the

Hi, my name is Silke,
I'm from Germany.
I'm 22 years old and a student of the
Friedrich-Alexander-Universität in
Erlangen, Germany. I study German and English to be a teacher,
but lately I've been going into medieval studies a lot. I
suppose it's a hobby. Besides old languages (and that's what
medieval studies at my university are all about :), I like new
languages like Japanese and I enjoy reading and drawing if I
have the time. In Germany, I dance (ballroom dances), and in the
summer I go rollerblading a lot. That's one of the things I will
miss most in Albion.
This upcoming year, I will be Albion's German teaching
assistant; I will teach tutorials for all three levels of
German, and host the cultural activities each week (every
Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the I-House!) I'm looking forward to
meeting all of you who study German in the tutorials, and anyone
who is interested in German culture at the activities. If you

Hi, ich heiße
Silke, ich bin aus Deutschland.
Ich bin 22 Jahre alt
und studiere an der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität in Erlangen,
Deutschland. Ich studiere Deutsch und Englisch auf Lehramt, aber
in letzter Zeit habe ich viel Mediävistik gemacht. Das ist wohl
ein Hobby. Außer alten Sprachen (und darum geht es in unserer
Mediävistik, yay) mag ich neue Sprachen wie z.B. Japanisch und
ich lese und zeichne gerne, wenn ich die Zeit dafür habe. In
Deutschland tanze ich (Standard und Latein), und im Sommer gehe
ich oft Inlineskaten. Das werde ich in Albion mit am meisten
vermissen.
In diesem Jahr werde ich Albions Deutsch-TA sein; ich werde
Tutorien für alle drei Deutschlevel unterrichten und die
wöchentlichen Kulturaktivitäten veranstalten (immer dienstags um
20:00 Uhr im I-House!) Ich freue mich darauf, euch alle, die ihr
Deutsch studiert, in den Tutorien zu treffen, und alle anderen,
die an der deutschen Kultur interessiert sind, bei den
