German Turcomania in the

17th and 18th Centuries"

Dr. Nina Berman

 In response to the early modern Ottoman invasions, Europeans
developed a strong interest in goods from the Ottoman Empire and a
                fascination with Turkish motifs and themes. Germany was no exception                   in this regard, in spite of the fact that it continued to fight the
Ottoman Empire until the end of the eighteenth century. Dr. Berman's
presentation explores the relationship between cultural discourses
and political action, between material culture and social interaction.

An exciting, surrealist film that takes us through the lives and friendship of two high school Ping Pong players. Peco is a talented player who dreams of going pro. Looking for someone to practice with, Peco teaches the game to his shy friend Smile. Smile is talented but would rather play for fun than compete, frustrating Peco and his coaches. Both must learn about the skills of being a good friend and player before they can achieve their dreams.

The horrifying, sometimes unintentionally funny system of observation in the former East Germany. In the early 1980s, the successful dramatist Georg Dreyman and his longtime companion Christa-Maria Sieland, a popular actress, are big intellectual stars in the socialist state, although they secretly don't always think loyal to the party line. One day, the Minister of Culture becomes interested in Christa, so the secret service agent Wiesler is instructed to observe and sound out the couple, but their life fascinates him more and more...

A traditional Quinceañera is when a young woman makes her debut

before the church and society at the age of 15. It is a rite of passage

celebrating her transition from childhood to adulthood and is one of

the most memorable experiences of her life. Wednesday the 3rd will be

an educational night about what a Quinceañera is and teach about the event.

Thursday the 4th will be a Quinceañera style party so come for some fun!

Dr. Ron Cere from Eastern Michigan University

Dr. Cere is a Professor of Spanish at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) and has taught, among other subjects, translation and Spanish for the Professions, notably business, since 1970. He holds a graduate certificate of Business Administration from N.Y.U. and speaks French, Italian and Portuguese. He has written numerous articles for publishing companies (McGraw Hill, Harcourt Brace, etc.) as well as professional journals (Hispania, Canadian Modern Language Journal, Dimensions, etc.), and he has made over 100 presentations on Commercial Spanish and other foreign language subjects, especially cross-cultural communication, at national and international conferences.

On Thursday, Nov 3 Spanish and French students from Lumen Christi High School in Jackson, Michigan visited Albion College. They experienced a class, ate with Albion College students at their language tables, and participated in a discussion about Spanish and French-speaking countries with a panel of native speaker teaching assistants and advanced students.

They also got to see a presentation about careers incorporating foreign languages and a they were given a campus tour.
