Una Noche de Poesía

On the evening of November 11, 2002, 10 talented students from Spanish 201 classes recited poems by historically significant Hispanic poets, competing for a grand prize of $20.  Students were judged by fluent Spanish speakers for their accuracy, memorization, emotion, creativity (gestures etc.) and for their short interpretation of the poem.   Also, advanced students from the Spanish  301 class recited their own poetic creations.  Audience members were able to examine the exposition of music/art/poetry projects on display from 201 students as well. This made for an entertaining night of art, and of the Spanish language, in itself a work of art!

Grand prize winner Nasko Shishkov displayed intense emotion; taking on the role Neruda's speaker, he longed for a distant love.

A Message from the Past

[…]
Por qué cantáis la rosa, ¡oh Poetas!
Hacedla florecer en el poema;
Sólo para nosotros
Viven todas las cosas bajo el Sol.
El poeta es un pequeño Dios.

                        -Vicente Huidobro, “Arte Poetica”

(TRANSLATION)

[…]
Why must you sing about the Rose, oh Poets!
Make it blossom in the poem;
Only for us
Do all things under the sun have life.
The poet is a small God.

                         -Vicente Huidobro, “Poetic Art”
