German Major and Minor Requirements

 

 

Requirements for the German Major

  • A minimum of eight units numbered 201 and above, from German 301 to German 402.
  • German 301 is a required course. (We recommend that you also take German 302).
  • Students whose placement test results exempt them from courses at the 200-level must fulfill the eight-unit requirement beginning at the 300-level. These students do not receive credit for 201 or 202.
  • At least one semester of an approved off-campus program. (We recommend that you take at least one German course after you return from study abroad)
  • Courses in the major must be taken for a numerical grade.
  • With departmental permission, courses taken abroad may replace courses in the major.
  • Residence in the Gerstacker International House for at least one semester and the successful completion of FL110.
  • A maximum of one unit from Advanced Placement credit can count toward the minor.

Requirements for the German Minor

  • A minimum of six units in German, numbered 201 and above, from German 301 t German 402.

  • Students whose placement test results exempt them from courses at the 200-level must fulfill the six-unit requirement beginning at the 300-level. These students do not receive credit for 201 or 202.
  • Courses in the major must be taken for a numerical grade.
  • Off-campus study is recommended but not required for the minor.
  • With departmental permission, courses taken abroad may replace courses in the minor.
  • Residence in the Gerstacker International House for one semester and the successful completion of FL110.
  • A maximum of one unit from Advanced Placement credit can count toward the minor.
  • Courses required for the minor must be taken for a numerical grade.

Requirements for Major With Elementary Education Certification

  • These requirements are still in flux.
  • A minimum of eight units numbered 201 and above, from German 301 to German 402
  • German 301 is a required course. (We recommend that you also take German 302).
  • Students whose placement test results exempt them from courses at the 200-level must fulfill the eight-unit requirement beginning at the 300-level. These students do not receive credit for 201 or 202.
  • Courses in the major must be taken for a numerical grade.
  • With departmental permission, courses taken abroad may replace courses in the major.
  • Residence in the Gerstacker International House for one semester, and the successful completion of FL 110
  • Completion of all other requirements for teacher certification.
  • Study abroad is strongly recommended, and may soon be required by the State of Michigan.

Requirements for Major and Minor With Secondary Education Certification

  • Are still in flux.
  • A minimum of eight units in German, numbered 201 and above.
  • Courses should be taken in this sequence starting at the level indicated by the departmental placement test. A teaching major consists of eight units, 201 or above, including three courses beyond 301. A teaching minor consists of five units, 201 or above, including German 301, 302 and other upper level courses.
  • Residence in the Gerstacker International House for one semester and the successful completion of FL 110.
  • Completion of all other requirements for teacher certification.
  • Study abroad is strongly recommended, and may soon be required by the State of Michigan.
