Family Day 2008: November 7-9

A Letter from President Randall

It is a pleasure to welcome you to campus for Family Weekend 2008! Over the past year, my first as Albion’s president, I have had the privilege of meeting many parents, friends, and alumni at events both on and off campus. I continue to be struck by the deep affection you all have for this remarkable college.

Over the past year, Albion College has embarked on a strategic planning process, “Albion 2015,” and part of our charge in that process is to identify characteristics and programs that will truly distinguish Albion among its peer colleges. Our discussions, both here on campus and with hundreds of alumni and friends across the country over the past year, have confirmed that Albion needs to openly embrace the challenge of preparing students for the future. We can become distinctive by anticipating emerging issues that impact the human and global condition, providing students with a challenging and rigorous academic experience, and fully engaging students in their own learning. Our students will graduate with the necessary skills and knowledge to anticipate, solve, and prevent the complex social, political, environmental, and economic problems occurring in our world.

Does this vision mean that we leave “Albion, Dear Albion” behind? No. As the College moves forward boldly into the future, we will also recognize and celebrate an impressive 173-year-old history. We will build upon our strength as a liberal arts college. We will identify, preserve, and enhance those key pillars of our past and present, such as strong faculty-student interaction, student research opportunities, and an all-encompassing educational experience. These fundamental qualities of an Albion education will continue to serve our students well in the future.
