Michigan Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship ProgramAlbion College has been sought out by the coordinators of the Michigan Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship Program to receive the first non-golf course property site assessment, in the nation. Greg Lyman, Michigan State University, Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, is the coordinator of the program. "Albion College is a logical location to kick off the 'colleges and universities' initiative in Michigan. Albion College has sensitive relationships with in its borders like the Kalamazoo River and the City of Albion." Mark Frever, Albion College, Grounds Supervisor will conduct the self-assessment modules to gain state certification. "Other states conduct inspections, then penalize with fines for environmental impacts. Albion College has the opportunity to represent college and universities, be proactive and reinforce the relationship established between the State of Michigan and the Turfgrass Industry." The Michigan Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship Program was launched in 1998 and is tailored for golf course properties. The program has been developed as a partnership between the Michigan Turfgrass Foundation, Michigan State University, the Golf Association of Michigan, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
