X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (XRF)
The x-ray fluorescence spectrometer is used for analysis of solid samples, including soils, sediment, rocks and dried plant material. It is highly automated and thus easy to use. Students in Introductory Geology used this instrument for projects such as looking at lead concentrations in soils in parks and school playgrounds. The XRF spectrometer was acquired in 1999 with a grant from the National Science Foundation to Dr. Tim Lincoln. Example of a student research project: Michelle Sautter (’00) Heavy metals in sumac. This work is in progress. Michelle is investigating the extent of accumulation of heavy metals in sumac, which is a late winter source of food for several species of bird in this area.
