Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing Laboratory

The lab consists of nine computers running ARCVIEW, the most widely used Geographic Information System (GIS). With the GIS, it is possible to investigate relations among any type of spatial data, for example demographics and various sources of pollution. The lab also allows work with satellite images of the earth. Many EI students use the lab for map preparation.

This lab was developed in 1997 with a grant from the National Science Foundation to Drs Russ Clark and Tim Lincoln of the Department of Geological Sciences. Dr Clark is the Director of the laboratory.

Example of a student research project:

Jen Bujdos, (’99) A three dimensional model of the geology and hydrology of the SE Albion Quadrangle. Jen’s work showed how GIS could be used to find the safest place for a landfill in this area.
