Course of Study | Admission & Testing | Special Advisory

Secondary Teaching Majors and Minors

Students seeking teaching certification at the secondary level must complete a teaching major (minimum 8 units), a teaching minor (minimum 5 units), and the prescribed courses in professional education. Secondary teaching majors and minors may be completed in any of the following fields:

Biology  Chemistry Earth Science English French
German Health Education
(minor only)
History Mathematics Music Education
Physical Education Physics Political Science Psychology Spanish
       

Changes in courses in these teaching majors and minors may be made only after consultation with the department concerned. Any changes agreed on must be in writing from the department chair and filed in the Shurmur Education Institute office. All courses in the teaching major and minor and all education courses, except student teaching, must be taken for numeric grades.

This brochure supersedes the teaching major and minor information listed in the 2003-2004 academic catalog.


BIOLOGY

The program in Biology will be designed in consultation with the faculty in biology and will require written approval of the Chair, PREFERABLY NO LATER THAN THE BEGINNING OF THE SECOND SEMESTER OF THE JUNIOR YEAR. The program recognizes the special needs of the pre-college teacher and provides for a broad background in both the biological sciences and cognate areas. The course of study will include:

MAJOR

EIGHT units, including:
BIOL 195 Ecology, Evolution, and Biodiversity
BIOL 210 Cell and Molecular Biology
1 unit "animal" course (200-level or above)
1 unit "plant course" (200-level or above)
 (one of the latter two courses must come from the "field work"
 category)
1 unit "analytical laboratory" work
3 units of elective

At least six of the above must include a laboratory

PLUS one unit chosen from any of the following laboratory cognates:
Geology 101 or 103
Physics 115

PLUS two units in chemistry from: CHEM 121, CHEM 211

MINOR

MAJOR

The chemistry major has two tracks, either of which may be used as a teaching major. The majors share a common core consisting of:

EARTH SCIENCE/GEOLOGY
The Department of Geological Sciences offers majors in earth science and geology and a minor in earth science. The earth science major and minor are designed primarily for students in the elementary and secondary education programs. The geology major is designed for students who intend to pursue a career in geology.

MAJOR

EARTH SCIENCE MAJOR with teaching certification

NINE units in Geology to include:

GEOL 101 Introductory Geology - 1 unit

PLUS: five other geology courses at the 200-level or above (one must be at the 300-level), selected in consultation with, and approved by, the department. These may not include Geology 210, summer field camp, or a directed study.

PLUS: Physics 105 AND one additional cognate course in mathematics, chemistry, physics, and/or biology, listed under Track L (see academic catalog). Demonstrated mathematics proficiency at the Mathematics 125 level. Completion of all other requirements as outlined in the section “Requirements for All Students Majoring in Geology or Earth Science” (see academic catalog).

With departmental permission, courses taken abroad may replace courses from this sequence.

A teaching minor consists of five units at the 201 level or above, and must include 301, 315, and either 305 or 306. 

All foreign language majors are required to study at least one semester in an approved off-campus program and have at least one semester of residence in the Gerstacker International House.
