Course of Study | Admission & Testing | Special Advisory Suggested Course of Study - New Secondary & K-12 ProgramNote: The information below is for students who enrolled at Albion College in fall 2004 or later. All those who enrolled prior to fall 2004 should refer to the previous education program documents. The following suggested sequence of courses is designed to permit students to receive their B.A. degree and secondary or K-12 education certification by the end of their senior year. The Education Department recognizes that under certain circumstances this sequence may require modification. Deviations from the suggested sequence must be approved by the department. Please contact your education advisor for more information. The Education Department encourages students to pursue the college activities of their choice. Students should recognize, however, that participating in some activities may make it impossible for them to receive secondary/K-12 teacher certification and to graduate with their B.A. degree in four years, so planning ahead is very important. Generally, students who (a) study abroad for a semester (which is strongly encouraged), (b) participate in a MIAA sport, or (c) apply for admission to the education program sometime after fall semester of their sophomore year, are most likely to need an additional semester to graduate or to complete certification requirements. Note: Education courses listed in more than one year may be taken either year. Suggested Sequence for Secondary
Teacher Certification Only First Year Students No education courses can be taken during the first year. Students should apply for admission into the education program sometime prior to spring break of the spring semester. The following courses from other departments are required for certification and should be taken during the first year: ENGL 101: English Composition (1 unit, fall, spring) or 101H:
Honors Composition (1 unit, fall, spring) Sophomore Year EDUC 201: Processes in Teaching and Learning (1 unit, fall) EDUC 373: Literacy Pedagogy in Secondary Schools (1
unit, fall, spring) EDUC 373: Literacy Pedagogy in Secondary Schools (1
unit, fall, spring) Notes: (a) EDUC 422 and 423 (student teaching and student
teaching seminar) Our policy is that no courses offered in the Shurmur Education Institute (courses labeled Education) will be substituted with a course at another institution of higher learning; this policy is consistent with the practice of most teacher preparation programs. If you wish to make any other course substitutions, you must have the approval of the appropriate department chair and ask them to notify us by email or written memo. Students who begin their studies in Education as juniors or seniors usually need additional time at Albion to complete requirements. They can graduate with their class and then return to Albion for a ninth semester to complete Elementary, Secondary, or K-12 requirements. Suggested Sequence for K-12 Teacher Certification Only in Foreign Language Education, Music Education, or Physical Education Course requirements differ across majors and minors for K-12 certification, so students should consult with their academic advisor when planning a course sequence.
