Professional Organizations

Interested in getting involved in your profession and keeping up-to-date on ideas and issues in the areas you want to teach?  Here are some state and national professional organizations, many of which have special discounts for students.

Michigan Teacher Network - This section contains descriptions and links to Web sites for over 500 organizations and professional associations related to K-12 education. Use the links in the left side bar to browse the collection by topic.

Michigan Department of Education - all the information you need related to teaching in Michigan.

Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning (MACUL) - provides suggestions and resources for integrating technology into the classroom.

Michigan Consortium for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching with Technology (COATT) - COATT was initiated through the support of Senator Carl Levin (D-MI) to provide incentives and encourage high standards for Michigan teachers in infusing technology into instruction. 

Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) - a diverse, international community of educators, forging covenants in teaching and learning for the success of all learners

Cambios is a group located in Lenawee County (MI) which is "dedicated to learning and providing information about the contributions that America's diverse population has made on the social, educational, economic, agricultural, artistic, political and cultural development of the United States of America." They have a list of recommended books for multicultural education in elementary schools which merits a close look.

Head Start - one of the first national programs to focus on helping children from low-income families get a "head start" on their education.

International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) - a nonprofit professional organization with a worldwide membership of leaders and potential leaders in educational technology.

National Education Association (NEA) - one of the two largest teacher's unions.

American Federation of Teachers - the other large teacher union.
