Geology of the Kalamazoo River

Kevin and Alex fill cartons with dirt for our erosion activity.

During a summer science camp that was run by myself and other students in the Albion College Education Department, we taught a unit that focused on the geology of the Kalamazoo River, a River that runs through the town of Albion. Our unit focused on major concepts including watersheds, rocks and minerals, and erosion. Our lessons were designed to help students use major process skills such as predicting, observing, classifying, collecting and organizing data, interpreting data, and making and testing hypotheses. Our students were third through fifth grade.

Health & Nutrition
I taught this unit in a fifth grade class following closely to the health standards determined in The Michigan Model. Major concepts included the Food Guide Pyramid and the importance of a balanced diet, exercise and fitness, and the effects of tobacco on the human body. Students also analyzed how each of these concepts is portrayed by the media. Each lesson required the students to apply a variety of science process skills including predicting, collecting and organizing data, reporting data, identifying and controlling variables, and making and testing hypotheses. Many of the activities also required students to work cooperatively with their classmates.
