Course of Study | Admission & Testing | Special Advisory | Secondary Majors and Minors

There is a suggested sequence for how to structure your course of study, which can be used as a model for integrating core, major, minor, education, and elective coursework. This sequence also lays out a schedule of which requirements (besides coursework) should be fulfilled at certain times.

French

K-12 certification for French means that, in addition to the required French curriculum for secondary certification, the student will participate in the FLES program for at least one academic year. This program is carefully supervised and carries an ambitious supervised lab component. Foreign Languages 345, Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages, is highly recommended as an elective course. It does not count towards the required French curriculum for secondary certification.

German

K-12 certification for German means that, in addition to the required German curriculum for secondary certification, the student will participate in the FLES program for at least one academic year. Music

The course of study for K-12 Music Education certification is distributed as shown below. All music majors must satisfy the piano proficiency level required by the Music Department and must present a senior recital. Contact the Music Department for specific requirements.

Certification for secondary vocal or instrumental music education alone requires one and one-half units less than the K-12 music certification. Students interested in either of these alternatives should contact the Music Department for specific details.

  • Music 101, Music Theory (1 unit)
  • Music 102, Music Theory, continued (1 unit)
  • Music 201, Music Theory, continued (1 unit)
  • Music 202, Music Theory, continued (1 unit)
  • Music 212, Introduction to Music Literature (1 unit)
  • Music 230, Introduction to Conducting (1/2 unit)
  • Music 313, Music History (1 unit)
  • Music 314, Music History (1 unit)
  • Applied Music (153-187E), at least three in a single performance area (3 1/2 units)
  • Voice/piano classes and/or applied music (1/2 unit)
  • Music 230, Introduction to Conducting (1/2 unit)
  • Music 330 or 331 (1/2 unit)

Students should also take one of these groups of courses in lieu of Education 331 and Education 288/289 or 388/389:

Voice/Keyboard Emphasis

  • Music 325, Teaching Music in Elementary Schools (1 unit; offered alternate years)
  • Music 328, Teaching Choral Music in Secondary Schools (1 unit; offered alternate years)

Physical Education

K-12 certification for Physical Education means that, in addition to the required Physical Education curriculum for secondary certification, the student will take two additional courses: Physical Education 333, Physical &Health Education Curriculum in Elementary School (1 unit), and a Directed Study in Elementary Physical Education (1/2 unit).

Spanish

K-12 certification for Spanish means that, in addition to the required Spanish curriculum for secondary certification, the student will participate in the FLES program for at least one academic year. Visual Arts

K-12 certification for Visual Arts means that, in addition to the required Visual Arts curriculum for secondary certification, the student will take two additional courses: Education 389, Pedagogy in Visual Art (1 unit), and Education 388/389, Pedagogy in the Humanities (1/2 - 1 unit). In the Humanities class, students will integrate Art curriculum with the curriculum in the other disciplines. Student teaching should be arranged so that half the semester is spent in a secondary school and half in an elementary school.
