There is a suggested sequence for how to structure your course of study, which can be used as a model for integrating core, major, minor, education, and elective coursework.. This sequence also lays out a schedule of which requirements (besides coursework) should be fulfilled at certain times.

Biology

The program in Biology will be designed in consultation with the faculty in biology and will require written approval of the Chair, preferably no later than the beginning of the second semester of the junior year. The program recognizes the special needs of the precollege teacher and provides for a broad background in both the biological sciences and cognate areas. The course of study will include 7 units in biology, distributed as follows, and cognates as described:

The course of study will include 8 units in english, distributed as shown below. The eight units used to fulfill major requirements must be taken for a grade and may include a directed study only with special permission (See Catalog for English courses that may not be counted toward the major).

  • Two courses from the following:
    • English 253, British Literature I
    • English 257, American Literature I
    • English 261, Greek & Roman Literature
  • One course from the following:
    • English 203, Advanced Expository Writing
    • English 205, Introductory Creative Writing
    • English 207, Contemporary Journalism
    • English 209, Nature Writing

    • English 321, Advanced Creative Writing I

French

A teaching major consists of eight units of French from courses numbered 201 or above, distributed as shown below. With departmental permission, courses taken in France may replace some of those listed; however, 341 and either 315 or 342 must be taken on campus. Courses should be taken in this sequence starting at the level indicated by the departmental placement test.

  • French 301, French Conversation
  • French 302, French Composition
  • French 341, French Literature to 1789
  • Either of:
    • French 315, Interpretation of Literature
    • French 342, French Literature from 1789 to Present
  • Four units from among the following:
    • French 201, Intermediate French
    • French 202, Intermediate French, continued
    • French 307, Civilizations of the French-speaking World
    • French 337, Cinema in French
    • French 398, Practicum (1/2 unit)
    • French 401, French Seminar (1/2 unit)
    • French 402, French Seminar (1 unit)

Foreign Languages 345, Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages, is highly recommended as an elective course. It does not count towards the eight.

Geological Sciences

The course of study will include 8 units in geological science, distributed as shown below. Math proficiency at the level of Math 125 must also be demonstrated.

  • Geology 101, Introductory Geology (1 unit)
  • Geology 103, Introduction to Earth History (1 unit)
  • Geology 201, Structural Geology (1 unit)
  • Geology 203, Mineralogy (1 unit)
  • Geology 204, Introductory Petrology (1 unit)
  • Geology 205, Sedimentation & Stratigraphy (1 unit)
  • Two units in consultation with the Geology Department, one at the 200 level and one at the 300 level. These may not include Geology 210, or any summer field camp, or directed studies.

German

History

The course of study will include 8 units in history, distributed as shown below. No more than three 100-level units may be counted towards the major.

  • European History (2 units)
  • United States History (2 units, one of which must be 200-level or above)
    • one course about the United States before 1877
    • one course about the United States after 1877
  • Asian, African, and Latin American History (2 units)
  • one course numbered 390 through 402 (excluding History 391 and 392) (1 unit)

The course of study will include 8 units in mathematics, distributed as shown below.

Physical Education

The course of study will include 8 units in physical education, distributed as shown below. There is also a proficiency requirement in First Aid, CPR, and Swimming. It can be met either by taking Standard First Aid and a swimming class at Albion College, or by having current Red Cross certification in First Aid, CPR and Lifeguarding at the time of graduation.
