Course of Study | Admission & Testing | Special Advisory

Admission

The State of Michigan will grant provisional teacher certification to Albion College graduates who successfully complete the course of study and are recommended as having met the qualifications for selection as outlined below:

  1. Students desiring admission to the Elementary Education Program must file formal application for entrance and have earned a cumulative academic average of at least 2.7 at the end of the second semester of their college work. In the evaluation of these applications, the following factors will be taken into account:
    • Two recommendations from faculty members.
    • Personal interview with a member of the Education staff.
    • Passing scores on record for the Basic Skills Test.
  2. Students admitted to and taking courses in the Elementary Program must:
    • Attain a grade point average of 3.0 or above in their teaching major and professional education courses by the end of the fourth semester to continue in the Education Program.
    • Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.7 in Albion College core, category and elective courses by graduation.
    • Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in their teaching major courses by graduation.
    • Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in Education Department courses by graduation.
    • Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in Education Department Planned Program courses by graduation.
    • Pass the Writing Competence Examination before the end of the sophomore year.
    • Meet each semester with an Education faculty member.
    • Take and pass the Elementary Education test and subject area test (Major) during the junior or senior year.

Testing

Act 267 of the Public Acts of 1986 requires that all students wishing admission to any Michigan Teacher Education Program must take and pass the Basic Skills Test administered by National Evaluation Systems, Inc. This test should be taken during the freshman year and no later than the end of the sophomore year. Student teaching assignments cannot be made until a passing score is received by Albion College. Students will not be eligible to register for 300-level courses if they have not passed the Basic Skills Test.

All students must take and pass the Elementary Education Test and a subject area test in their major during the junior or senior year. Passing scores must be received before a student can be recommended for Elementary Certification. Cost, dates, sites and fee information for the tests is available in the Registration Book which may be obtained in the Education Department office.

All Information about state tests is available in the education department's main office (Vulgamore 306) or from the Michigan Department of Education's Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) website.

As requested by the Michigan Department of Education to release information on institutional reports for teacher tests, we are reporting that Albion College students who completed the Education program for certification during the academic year 1999-2000 had a 100% passing rate for the Basic Skills test and the Elementary Education test.  Because only a few students take other required subject area tests, Albion's pass rates for these tests are not included by the State in this reporting period.
