Making
a plan
Where
are you and where are you going? The
purpose of your portfolio is to help you
bring together your personal, academic,
and professional experiences. Self
assessment exercises will help you reflect
on how you got to where you are now and
where you are going. Goal setting
will help you be intentional about how you
get where you are going.
During
the first year in college it is very
common for the personal, academic and
professional experiences to be separate or
loosely connected. Eventually there
should be natural links that demonstrate
how the three come together. Example:
A student who has
always been very interested in animals may
volunteer at the local Humane Society,
work for a Veterinarian, and declare a
major in biology.
The
best way to get where you are going is to
make a plan.
Your
academic, personal and professional plans
will serve as the tool or location for
sharing the "public" side of
your portfolio.
Start
out by making a paper plan with the
headings "Academic,"
"Personal," and
"Professional." Next, jot down
topics or concepts that come to mind when
you see each heading listed on the page. Finally,
decide the topics and concepts that are
most important to you and expand on those
or highlight why they are important.
