CSRI PUBLICATION SERIES
The CRSI—the parent organization of the renamed CSRI—served for many years as a testing-ground and vehicle for some important publications in the study of Indian religions. During the past fifteen years, several important works have emanated from its annual workshops. Notable among these are Gods of Flesh, Gods of Stone edited by Joanne Waghorne, Norman Cutler, and Vasudha Narayanan, Purity and Auspiciousness in Indian Society edited by John Carman and Frederique Apffel Marglin, Demon Devotees edited by Alf Hiltebeitel, and a special issue of Journal of Vaisnava Studies edited by John Cort. While firmly grounded in the tradition of productive and innovative scholarship piloted by its parent organization, the CSRI has now envisioned some new directions and initiatives. One specific new venture launched this year is the institutionalization of a publication series in the form of thematically structured edited volumes originating from the annual meetings. In collaboration with Columbia University Press and Albion College, the CSRI is now home to a publication series tentatively named CSRI Publication Series. The CSRI Series will regularly publish thematic volumes that will include a select number of papers presented at its annual meetings as well as quality essays solicited from respected scholars. While Selva J. Raj, the chairman of the CSRI, will serve as the series editor, different teams of respected scholars whose research specialties coincide with various conference themes would be invited to assume editorship for different edited volumes. Plans are currently underway for the first volume in this series on the theme of Modern Constructions of the Miraculous and the Mysterious in Indian Religions under the principal editorship of Corinne G. Dempsey of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and co-editorship of Selva J. Raj of Albion College. Miracle as Modern Conundrum in South Asian Traditions, originating from the 2005 Annual Meeting, will be the first in the newly established CSRI Publication Series. Edited by Corinne G. Dempsey and Selva J Raj, Miracle as Modern Conundrum in South Asian Traditions will be published by SUNY Press.
