Chemistry 123L: Introduction to Inorganic Chemistry

Announcements

Please note that 123 labs will begin the week of 26 January.

You are responsible for printing a copy of the 123 lab manual BEFORE lab begins. You will not be permitted to lab without your lab manual. To print the lab manual, you will need to have Adobe Acrobat or another pdf reader installed on your computer.

You must arrive to your lab section that week in proper attire (closed-toe, non-perforated shoes) with your safety goggles and lab notebook.

Policies

It is Chemistry Department policy that you must pass both the laboratory and the non-laboratory (combined lecture and final exam) portions of the course in order to pass Chemistry 123.

Individual instructors may have homework and/or quizzes that affect the course grade.

Missed quizzes or exams will not be made up and will be included as 0 in the student's grade unless the student has made prior arrangements with the instructor or can obtain a valid excuse from the Office of the Dean of Students.

Absences required by extracurricular activities and coursework will be excused–it is the student’s responsibility to make up all missed work and to give advance notice of such planned absences to the instructor.

Laboratory Grade

You will be graded in four ways:

  1. Your lab notebook will be evaluated regularly by your lab instructor (see "Some General Comments on Keeping an Adequate Laboratory Record", in your 123 lab manual").
  2. You will be graded on your reports of the contents of several "unknowns", which will be mixtures of the above metal ions.
  3. You will have 2-3 lab quizzes to test your knowledge of the chemistry of these metal ions.
  4. You will be evaluated on your attendance, working time, and maintenance of your work area and test solutions.  This latter is a minimum standard expected of all students, and failure to meet this standard will result in a lowering of the grade achieved in areas 1-3 (see "Rules of the Game", in your lab manual).
