Scoring Big as an Intern with the Detroit Red Wings:

Matt Anderson '08

As an intern for the Detroit Red Wings, I contributed in many ways to the marketing success of the business. For instance, I created a commemorative card set that was given away the night that Steve Yzerman’s number was retired. Additionally I was involved in all “in-game” entertainment, and contacted radio stations and newspapers to exchange tickets for publicity for special events. The work environment was fast-paced, and I had to constantly meet deadlines. As a result, I really developed my multi-tasking skills.

An internship is beneficial for anyone because you get real world experience. Personally, this internship helped me decide whether or not I wanted to work in this career field. Plus it helps me get a “foot in the door” for future job opportunities. For students who plan to do an internship, a few words of advice: be professional at all times. Also, be patient and don’t get discouraged by what may seem to be “busy work”; it’s still good experience.

I would recommend everyone get an internship, especially those who would like to work in a competitive field like the sports entertainment industry. There are many more jobs in sports than people realize; however, getting one can be difficult. An internship is a great way to make yourself stand out.
