A Briton Working in Britain:

Scotty Bruce '08, public relations intern in London

I interned at a youth marketing firm called Making Waves Communications in London, England. I started out working in the public relations department, where I created databases of college radio stations and contacted them regarding upcoming promotions. I also created Photoshop documents to catalogue clippings of our clients and their products. Although my internship was originally in public relations, I also volunteered to help in a variety of projects, and eventually was working in video design, graphic design, and web design. My last project was re-designing the company website.

I would recommend future Albion interns recognize the value of interning with a smaller company. This allowed me to get a more rounded experience; I wasn’t “stuck” in one department. Also, I suggest volunteering for everything. If you work hard for the first couple of weeks and try new things, you’ll soon find what you are good at and what you really want to do. Do not be afraid to ask questions. I picked my supervisor’s brain and learned a lot about the business world in the process. People love talking about their jobs and past experiences, and they love giving advice.

Internships give you real world experience in your field of interest, and they will definitely help you get job interviews after graduation. I learned a great deal about youth marketing in a big city, and how to create brand interaction with potential customers. I also learned a lot about what it takes to run a business, and how to participate in professional business meetings and interactions. I would definitely recommend other Albion students get an internship- you’ll learn a great deal about your career interest.
