What does an Alumni
Career Mentor do?
An Alumni Career Mentor is an Albion College alumnus/a or a friend of
the college who volunteers to network with current Albion College
students or other alumni (often students who are only a year out of
school) for the purposes of career exploration and professional
development.
How often can I expect to
be contacted by students?
The default number of contacts per month is set at 10 and will not
change unless you choose to do so while editing your mentor profile.
This means than no more than 10 students can view your information in
any given month.
Other schools who use this online Mentor Program have
noted that, in general, only 30-40% of searches for mentors result in
actual contacts being made. Keep this in mind when setting your
number of contacts per month since many students are "just looking" and
may not contact you after all.
How much time will be
required of me?
Each Alumni Career Mentor will spend a different amount of time on the
program. You decide the level of commitment and time you can
volunteer based on your schedule. This could range from answering
an occasional email to volunteering to come to campus and give a
presentation about your career field. In your mentor profile you
can set the number of students who are able to view your profile at one
time. See above.
Participants are advised to be respectful of your time. As an
Alumni Career Mentor, expect a couple of hours throughout the semester.
Of course, if you are in a popular career field or job market, you may
receive more contacts then other mentors, but you always have the option
of limiting the number of students who may view your profile by
adjusting that number via your mentor profile.
I don't work in HR, and
I'm not a recruiter. Will students think I'll be able to get them
a job at my organization?
Student participants are advised not to use the Alumni Career Mentor
Program to directly solicit employment from alumni or their
organizations. Students are clearly informed that while resume
critiquing, internships, job shadowing, and informational interviewing
are possible outcomes of a student/mentor relationship, they cannot be
guaranteed and should not be expected.
I'm a young alumnus/a, what
do I have to offer current students?
As a young alumnus/a, you have a lot to offer a current Albion College
student. You have probably recently gone through many of the
career challenges and decisions that current students find themselves
faced with. Our students tell us they value the advice of recent
graduates who can relate to their circumstances. Although you may
not be in a position to provide all the opportunities an older alumnus/a
can, your fresh insights are a valued part of this program.
How will I know if a
student has viewed my profile?
If an individual has browsed the Alumni Career Mentor database and saved
your profile for further consideration, your profile will automatically
include a record with the student's name and basic contact information.
What contact information
for me will be shared with a student?
As part of your profile, you will be able to indicate your preferred
contact information. This information is the ONLY contact
information students will be able to see when they search your profile.
Can I volunteer to share
specific types of career-related information?
Yes. When you complete your Alumni Career Mentor profile you
will be able to select one or more types of guidance you are willing to
provide to students (career resource, mentor for underrepresented
students, geographic location information, informational interviews,
internship opportunities, job shadowing experiences or short-term
housing). Additionally, you will be able to indicate what types of
volunteering you would be willing to do for Albion College (provide a
career talk, host an intern, serve as a panelist, provide a tour of your
workplace or write an article).
