Presidential Greetings

I hope all of you have been enjoying the warm days of summer break. I would like to take a few moments to give you a brief update of summer activities at Albion—and it has been a busy time for the College. We have a large group of FURSCA students on campus undertaking an impressive variety of work, and their Thursday presentations have been informative and entertaining. In addition to the visits of countless prospective students and their families and four packed SOAR sessions, we are focusing on the renovation and improvement of campus facilities. You will discover an attractive patio that was built outside the Lower Baldwin windows for dining under the oak grove canopy. Several campus buildings also have been renovated, including Vulgamore, Olin, Robinson, and Briton House apartments. I know you will enjoy and appreciate the improvements when you return.

Summer also has seen the continuation of our strategic planning process, “Albion 2015.” Our hard-working strategic planning committee is anticipating trends in liberal arts education and is thinking about bold initiatives to prepare students for the future. We will roll out “Albion 2015” during the 2008-2009 academic year. In other news this summer, our new provost, Dr. Susan Conner, joined us in July. I am thrilled to welcome this Michigan native who brings many years of leadership experience to Albion’s campus. And finally, as a personal note, my family and I toured northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Michigan is, indeed, a great vacationland! I am looking forward to seeing you in the fall.

Sincerely,

Dr. Donna M. Randall

We are Pleased to Present...
President Donna M. Randall cordially invites you to the 2008 William K. Stoffer Lecture by Bill McKibben at the Opening Convocation Tuesday, September 9th.

Environmentalist Bill McKibben will welcome students to campus as the 2008 William K. Stoffer Lecturer at Opening Convocation September 9.Environmentalist Bill McKibben will welcome students to campus as the 2008 William K. Stoffer Lecturer at Opening Convocation September 9. McKibben, who visits at a time when the College is closely examining its environmental impact, will discuss local economies, globalization, and the environment during his keynote address and in meetings with students, administrators, and the greater Albion community.

A frequent contributor to The New York Times, The Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s, The New York Review of Books, and Rolling Stone, McKibben is the author of nine books, including the bestselling “Deep Economy: the Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future” (2007), which addresses what the author sees as shortcomings of the growth economy and envisions a transition to a more local-scale economy.

“The things he is currently writing and speaking about—globalization, sustainability, and technology, among others—are important issues for the world,” said Mike Frandsen, director of the Carl A. Gerstacker Liberal Arts Institute for Professional Management, a 2008 Stoffer Lecture cosponsor along with the Gerald R. Ford Institute for Public Policy and Service, the Institute for the Study of the Environment, and the Foundation for Interdisciplinary Study. “His visit should accelerate efforts on campus to use resources in wise and sustainable ways.”

A scholar-in-residence at Middlebury College, McKibben organized Step It Up in 2007, an initiative that inspired 1,400 global warming demonstrations across all 50 states and which has been described as the largest day of protest about climate change in the nation’s history.

This year's Opening Convocation will be held Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at 7 PM in Goodrich Chapel.
