Community Service
Clubs and Organizations
Alpha Phi Omega
Alpha Phi
Omega is a coeducational National Service Fraternity, established at Albion
College in 1991. Our threefold program consists of Leadership, Friendship, and
Service. Our goal is developing leadership among our officers and members,
promoting friendship with all those we come into contact with, and providing
service to humanity. Our membership is open to all students who have a desire to
provide service through programs on campus and in the Albion community.
Best Buddies
Best Buddies is an international nonprofit organization whose
mission is to match college students and members of the
community who have intellectual disabilities in one-on-one friendships. Members make a commitment to spend time with
their buddies on a weekly basis in addition to attending
monthly group outings. Best Buddies is rewarding in that its
members have the opportunity to truly make a difference in
the life of another person. Many of the community buddies
have few other friends. These friendships boost buddies self-esteem in
addition to making them feel special. College students gain a friend and a
better understanding of how life is for those people who have intellectual
disabilities.
Circle K
New to campus for in the 2008-2009 year,
Circle K is an international volunteer service organization lead by
students seeking to make a difference on their campus, and in their
city, state, and world. Members are part of the Kiwanis Family, in which
they interact with adult Kiwanians, high school Key Clubbers, middle
school Builders Club students, and elementary school-aged K-Kids. The
Kiwanis Family is best known for eradicating Iodine Deficiency Disorder
in Third World countries, but can also be seen making small changes
happen around the world.
Circle K is truly an international organization, with clubs in
Canada, Jamaica, and Australia, Circle K International boasts more than
11,000 members. Part of the largest collegiate community service
organization in the world, we follow the tenets of service, leadership,
and fellowship, and truly "live to serve...love to serve!"
Child Ready Educational Activities Transforming the Environment (CREATE)
CREATE provides fun, educational activities for children of the community that
enhances their knowledge of the world around them with regard to environmental
and cultural aspects. CREATE works to unite student members with children
from the Albion community through weekly after school programs at the Whitehouse
Nature Center.
Global Medical Brigades
Global Medical Brigades
is a student organization that collects and raises all of the money to
help the less fortunate people in Honduras by providing villages with
medical care and medicine for up to a month. We take a trip every summer
and we see approximately 2500 people in a week. You don't have to be
premed to apply for this group. Strongly encouraged Spanish speaking
skills are very important but not a necessity. We also take medical
professionals with us on the trip. Along with medical attention, we also
provide a dental team to numb the area in the mouth, extract teeth, and
suture if they wish. This organization was started two years ago and is
growing rapidly.
Habitat For Humanity
Habitat For Humanity works in conjunction with the Greater
Albion Habitat for Humanity to provide low-cost housing to
families who display a need. This is done through the building
and renovation of homes in Albion and the surrounding area.
This organization provides a wonderful opportunity to serve
the community and work side by side with its residents.
The Nwagni Project
The Nwagni Project is a
student run, unofficial non-profit organization focusing on education
and community in Batchingou, Cameroon. Batchingou is a small village in
West Africa. We have raised over 25,000 dollars, which has gone toward
the building of a new school in Batchingou. Now that the school has been
completed, our next project is to create a clean water source for the
schools in the village.
Service Project Appalachia
Service
Project Appalachia provides students with an active and challenging spring break
that benefits needy communities. The group spends the fall and winter
fundraising to keep our costs down and when spring break rolls around we're off
to the Appalachian mountain region. Our main focus is to help low income
families by doing light construction work on their homes. We have a wonderful
time getting to know not only each other, but the people and communities we
visit.
STRIVE
Students Together Raising Integrity, Values, and Excellence
(STRIVE) consists of Albion College students and professors
who work together throughout the year to facilitate and
mentor small groups of Albion Middle School students. In this
way, a positive community connection is created, as
leadership opportunities for middle school students are
fostered, and the city of Albion is enhanced.
Student Volunteer Bureau (SVB)
Student Volunteer Bureau (SVB) is
composed of Albion College students that possess the ability to create
positive change and influence service “mindedness” into this campus and
community. Become a part of our enthusiastic, dedicated crew who believe
volunteering enhances campus life. SVB supports the annual New Orleans
trip, regular visits to Cass Community Social Services in Detroit, Walk
for Warmth, Box City, and our list continues. You have the ability to
make someone’s day in SVB, so let Albert Einstein’s words remain with
you: “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.”
Wayfarers International Group for Service
(WINGS)
Wayfarers International Group for Service (WINGS) actively
seeks projects which create the opportunity for our skills to
benefit others and for the experience to enrich our lives as
well. We are dedicated to the ideal of service and service
learning. Intended as an alternative break, the projects
undertaken by WINGS will occur outside the boundaries of
the United States. These projects may include, but are not
limited to, direct aid to people through the building and
refinishing of homes to more environmental concerns. WINGS
makes one excursion a year, generally during Albion College's
spring break. |
