Greetings from the Information
Technology division and ResNet! We are very excited about a number of
services we offer to our students this year.
Annual Information Technology Install Fair Software installation and network device configuration Friday, August 21, 8:00 AM- 3:00 PM Human Performance Lab (Wesley Hall Basement) and Saturday, August 22, Noon- 5:00 PM Ferguson Hall Ground Floor For more information, please go to http://www2.albion.edu/it/ Windows Vista Windows Vista is now a supported operating system. It is important to note, however, that some online services and software applications may not function in Vista. To ensure that students will not lose access to these resources, all public and residence computer labs will continue to run Windows XP. However, the Help Desk will provide support for student machines running Vista. Windows XP computers must have Service Pack 3 (SP3) and all critical updates to access the network. Legal Music Downloading Sites The website we suggest to use for information on legal music downloading is . There are many illegal ways to download music soif you have any questions, please contact the helpdesk before downloading music software. You can also visit our file sharing website http://www2.albion.edu/it/personal-computers-and-devices/42-music-downloads.
Cisco Clean Access (CCA) Network Authentication and Validation In order to access the Internet and other campus network services from the residence halls, students will be required to log in to CCA using a web browser. As an added security measure, CCA prevents Windows XP computers with security vulnerabilities from accessing the network until those vulnerabilities are corrected. For more information, please see http://www2.albion.edu/it/software/3-cisco-clean-access . Game Boxes and Wireless Access Points With Cisco Clean Access (CCA) on ResNet, students with ANY non-computer device that connects to the network (Wii, X-box, Playstation, Wireless Access Point, etc.) need to have that device registered and configured BEFORE it will work on the network. We will be able to do this during the Install Fair as well as at User Services - located on the ground floor of Ferguson Hall (Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - Noon and 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM). Routers are not permitted – see further information below. Microsoft Office Suite Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise Edition is installed on all public and residence hall computers. Office 2007 for PC's and Office 2008 for Macintosh will be available for installation on your own computer by downloading from the Information Technology web site (http://www2.albion.edu/it/) or by bringing your computer to Install Fair (if you're a new student) or to the Help Desk located on the ground floor of Ferguson Hall. Network Access in the Residence Halls All traditional residence halls, fraternities, Dean, Fiske, 501 W. Michigan, and I-House have wireless access in the common areas. Student rooms are equipped with ethernet ports, and you will need an ethernet patch cable to connect your computer to the port. The recommended length of cable is 25 feet, to allow connection from anywhere in the room. Rooms close to the common areas may receive a wireless signal, but a wireless connection is not guaranteed, and a wired connection will likely provide greater stability. Students bringing their own wireless access points must have those devices registered and configured by Information Technology. Routers are not permitted. See http://www2.albion.edu/it/support/31/90 for further information. Additional questions can be directed to the Help Desk at 517/629-0479 or helpdesk@albion.edu. |
