The 2009 Summer What's Up electronic newsletter is designed to bring you current news from
Albion College as well as important information to help you prepare for
the coming school year. If you have questions regarding any of the
information contained in the What's Up, please call the corresponding
office. If you cannot reach that office or have additional questions,
you may call the What's Up Editor, Tracey Howard, in the Campus Programs
and Organizations Office at 517/629-0433 or the Student Affairs Office
at 517/629-0226. Many faculty and staff have been on campus this
summer gearing up for what promises to be an exciting and fulfilling
year.
Presidential Greetings
I hope all of you have been enjoying the warm days of summer
break. I would like to take a few moments to give you a brief update of
summer activities at Albion. It has been a busy time for the College. We
have a large group of FURSCA students on campus undertaking an impressive
variety of work, and their Thursday presentations have been informative and
entertaining.
We have conducted campus tours for prospective students
and their families and welcomed our new students at three busy SOAR
sessions. Over the summer we are focusing on the renovation and improvement
of campus facilities. The Dow Center classroom is being remodeled to house
cardio fitness exercise equipment. Several projects are in process to make
the College more energy-efficient, including window replacements and
lighting upgrades in several buildings. We are constructing a free-standing
structure between the Kellogg Center and Robinson Hall to allow continuation
of the "sheet sign" tradition. Numerous other efforts including sidewalk
improvements, carpet replacements and both interior and exterior painting
are taking place. I know you will enjoy and appreciate the improvements when
you return.
We look forward to introducing the new Albion 1Card to the
campus community in the fall. This single card will provide students,
parents, faculty, and staff with convenient access to a myriad of facilities and
services on and around campus. With the new Albion 1Card, students will be
able to access residence halls, check out materials at the library, eat at
campus dining locations including the Mary Sykes Room and Eat Shop, as well
as Lower Baldwin, make purchases at the campus post office, buy textbooks
and other items from the bookstore, buy drinks and snacks at vending
machines, use laundry facilities, and make purchases at popular off-campus
businesses.
Summer also has seen the continuation of our strategic
planning process, Albion 2015. Many faculty and staff volunteered to serve
on implementation teams over the summer and are identifying specific
initiatives to advance our plan. We are excited about the challenge of
preparing our students for an unpredictable future and confident that our
planning will help students realize their educational goals.
The faculty and staff are all looking forward to seeing
you in the fall. Enjoy the summer!
Sincerely,
Dr. Donna M. Randall
President
We are Pleased to Present...
President Donna Randall cordially
invites you to the 2009 William K. Stoffer Lecture by Martin
Nesbitt, ’85, at the Opening Convocation, Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 7
p.m. in Goodrich Chapel. Treasurer for Barack Obama's 2008
presidential campaign, Marty Nesbitt is
currently president of The Parking Spot, which operates
off-airport parking facilities in ten major metropolitan areas,
and he chairs the Chicago Housing Authority. He continues to be
an adviser to President Obama.
As treasurer for the Obama
presidential campaign, Nesbitt oversaw a fund that grew to over
$700 million—the largest sum ever raised by a presidential
campaign—and he assisted with strategic decision-making. He also
managed the campaign finances when Obama ran for the U.S. Senate
in 2004.
While at Albion, Nesbitt was a member of the College's
professional management program (now Carl A. Gerstacker
Liberal Arts Institute for Professional Management), interned
with the accounting firm Deloitte in its Detroit office, and was
co-captain of the men’s basketball team.
After graduating, Nesbitt joined General Motors in the finance
division, earning his M.B.A. at the University of Chicago as a
GM Fellow.
Later he joined LaSalle Partners in Chicago, where he became a
partner.
In an interview with Albion’s
alumni magazine, “Io Triumphe!,” earlier this year, Nesbitt
said, “Over time I got exposed to things that informed me that
anything was possible. I was as capable as anyone. . . . There
were no constraints on my potential.” Individuals must
capitalize on the opportunities they are given, he noted. That’s
a message he will share with Albion students as he focuses his
speech on the importance of civic engagement and leadership.
The
Stoffer Lecture Series is made possible by the generosity of trustee Bill Stoffer, ’74, who has committed $1.5-million to an endowment for the
series. This is
just another example of the generosity and commitment of Albion College
alumni.
