Insurance/Vehicle Usage Student Health Insurance Student Travel Insurance Automobile Usage/Insurance All drivers of College-owned vehicles must have the appropriate driver's license. An annual review of driving records will be conducted and kept on file. Drivers are responsible for the safe operation of the vehicles and are responsible to comply with all applicable laws. Seat belt use is required. Departments will be charged, on a monthly basis, for gasoline expenses incurred while using a College-owned vehicle. Vehicles are to be maintained in a clean condition. Departments or individuals to whom vehicles are assigned are responsible for routine service and repairs.
Smoking and the use of other tobacco products is prohibited in College-owned or leased vehicles. Drivers of College-owned or leased automobiles are to be drug and alcohol free. They are not to possess, use or have detectible levels of drugs (controlled substances) or alcohol in their system while on duty for the College. Passengers are not permitted to possess or use any drugs (controlled substances) or alcohol while in transit. Please see the Motor Pool Policy on the Human Resources website. All automobile accidents must be reported to the College’s insurance carrier (The Travelers Insurance Company) within 24 hours of the accident. There is a $250 deductible applied to all repairs, which is charged to the respective department.Please contact the Business Office at 517-629-0289, immediately if there has been an accident. Contact Campus Safety at 517-629-5610 during the evening and on weekends. Van Usage Driver Certification: All persons who intend to drive a van must first be approved by Facilities Operations. All persons operating a van must have a valid operator’s license issued to them by the state of Michigan or another state. No person with more than three points on his/her license may operate a van. No person who has been convicted of an alcohol-related driving offense in the past ten years may operate a van. No person who has been convicted of any offense that involved a vehicle-related death may operate a van. Facilities Operations will check with the Secretary of State (or appropriate state agency) to confirm that a person who requests to become an approved driver has a valid driver’s license. In addition to an initial check, Facilities will check the legal driving status of all approved drivers on an annual basis. It is the responsibility of an approved driver to immediately notify Facilities in the event that additional points are assigned to his/her license and/or vehicle operating privileges are suspended or revoked. Persons requesting to become approved drivers will complete a training session to ensure safe van operation. Campus Safety will provide this training that will include actual operation of a College van. In addition to the initial training, approved drivers will repeat the training program every three years. Reservation and Return: Individuals or groups who wish to use a van for use should forward a request to Campus Services. Drivers will inspect the van for damage, and will complete the vehicle checklist prior to operating the van. Upon return to campus, drivers will park the van in the Facilities Operations parking lot. The vehicle checklist will be completed by the driver, and will be placed with the van keys in the key return slot at Campus Services. Van Travel: If a group is traveling with luggage, then no more than twelve people (driver included) may be transported in a van. Note that “luggage” does not include backpacks, purses, or other small bags that may be used for day or other short trips. Seatbelts shall be worn by the driver and all passengers at all times while the vehicle is in motion. It is the responsibility of the driver to ensure, prior to putting the vehicle in motion, that all passengers have their seatbelts properly fastened. No driver may drive a van more than ten consecutive hours, nor more than 12 hours in a 24-hour period. In addition, one passenger needs to stay awake to assist the driver. A driver who drives ten consecutive hours must have at least a four hour rest period before resuming driving of a van. At least one person on the trip must have a cell phone available in the event of an emergency. Drivers are prohibited from using cell phones while they are operating vans. Disability Insurance` Short term: Albion College provides salary continuation to those full-time employees temporarily disabled due to a non-occupational accident or illness including, in the case of a female employee, pregnancy and pregnancy- related conditions for all full-time faculty and administrative employees. Please see the Disability Insurance policy on the Human Resources website. Long term: Full-time faculty and administrative employees are eligible to participate in the Long-Term Total Disability Plan underwritten by UNUM Life Insurance Company of America beginning the first day of the month following one (1) year of employment. If you are absent from work on the day you would otherwise become eligible, you will become eligible on the day you return to work. The one-year waiting period is waived for new employees who, within three months prior to their employment, were insured through their previous employer under a group policy providing income benefits for a minimum of five years during total disability due to sickness. The total disability benefit allows for a monthly disability payment after six (6) months of continuous total disability as defined under the plan.
