Plasmolyzed Rhoeo discolor cells. Thin sections from the underside of Rhoeo leaves were immersed in solutions of varying osmolarity to examine the cells' capabilities to respond to osmotic stress. Plasmolysis results when excessive water is lost from the cells causing the cell membrane to "pull away" from the cell wall resulting in an apparent shrinking of the colored region in the slide below. Stomata are visible in the accompanying photo as well.
